Is there a reason NWN's reviews are awful right now? Why the Beamdog hate, are they being cancelled for unethical behavior? For 7 bucks, I'm considering getting the full package digital deluxe edition, but most of the reviews are just ambiguous hatemongering, and I look at reviews usually to make sure the game works. I'd look at the game's forum, but that just takes it to this board.

Is there anything I should know about what's going on, or is this just nutters mad about trans people again?
Ignore it and move on.
The hate towards Beamdog is generally for releasing "enhanced editions" at increased prices and removing the option of just buying the original editions, at a suitable price for old games.
Neverwinter Nights by itself is awful. The real deal on that game is user made content, you can find pretty high quality stuff there.
The base single player campaign though is just terrible.

The game is really good and there is a toon of fan made content to play, you must buy it at that price, it could give you thousands of hours of entertainment. Personally I really love it.

Try to look at the "verified owners" reviews only.
I think, that will give you some sort of an understanding, what's going on...

Yeah, in general if it's not by a verified owner doen't even bother to read it.
Most reviews are "I played this when I was 6 years old" or "I played the X version". None tells about the actual GOG product.

The NWN community is mainly attacking Beamdog for what the community sees as greed and profiteering. Essentially, the community sees the Enhanced Edition as a modest update (if at all) that doesn't work with many mods (for many the main reason to buy NWN) and that's been severely over-priced.

The good news IMO is...

... The GOG Enhanced Edition release includes both Beamdog's Enhanced Edition and the original "Diamond Edition," so it is my understanding that while many mods will not work on Beamdog's version, all of the vast number of older mods will work on Diamond Ed.

I thought the (original) singleplayer campaign wasn't bad, but it really does need a 2nd or 3rd character (which is probably why you can get a group so easily). But the base game is probably ~30 hours of gameplay, and as it enters newer modules more unique options start to appear (like having spell slots as part of negotiations to put kobolds to sleep to diffuse a hostage situation).

Seeing a lot of that going around.

This is half of them. The other half is dumb culture war stuff.

As a game NWN is fine. Nowhere near as good as the Infinity Engine games but worth playing through for CRPG fans, especially the expansions. I recently played a couple campaigns and the Enhanced Edition works great.
Neverwinter Nights is a great purchase. You'll get both the Enhanced Edition and Diamond Edition, so can try both versions and decided for yourself as to which you prefer.

The only reason I haven't bought it myself is that I already own Diamond plus have Infinite Dungeons, Pirates of the Sword Coast and Wyvern Crown of Cormyr working. (These three modules are technically DRMed, but there's a fix for that.)

As pointed out, the main attraction for NWN has always been the many fan made modules for the game.
