Literally just name all of my main characters "Ass Hole". I cannot remember so many characters and no company I am aware has ever had a main character with such a title. Solves my memory block regarding names.

Plus I laugh when it is totally out of context. Anything cute in gaming makes me laugh like a lunatic when the cute happy go lucky character says something seemingly benign and includes my name lol
i used to change every name if possible, but since i also use walkthroughs and FAQs more often than before which use the default names, i stopped doing it.

for main characters which sometimes don't have a default name when they ask for it in-game, i would just put in whatever comes to mind.

===
for strategy games and units/ships that can be renamed, then i usually name them according to purpose. like all the mooks in X-Com would have some acronyms to signified what i use them for. like "TeamB8-One" or "ImGonnaDie_noMenTrg". MOO2 ships would have something like "Scout1", "Boarder2", or "NaviComm=Jareds".

CarChris: What I wanted to say is that in a game's series, it's the only time I appoint the same name to the main hero of that series' games, not that I appoint surnames too. I mentioned the example of the surnames, to show the naming habit in Greece. In games, I only appoint names, e.g. "Amanda" in Morrowind-Oblivion-Skyrim. I plan a replay at them, and the new hero will still be an Amanda for me.

The only time, up till now, that I appointed a surname (apart from the name) to a game, was for Drakensang, because it was obligatory.
That doesn't always work.

Ultima: Say that, starting with Ultima 4, you create a female main character and give her a feminine name. This works for 4, 5, 6, 7, and 7 part 2. But then you get to Ultima 8, which has no gender selection and forces your character to be male, so the feminine name no longer works.

Accept no substitutes.

But seriously, usually either my nickname (derived from my real name) in case of roleplaying games, or thematic name in case of ARPGs, usually reflective of the theme of the character.
