I was rummaging through some old software and found physical copies of XIII and Prince of Persia Sands of Time which were promotional freebies included with an MSI graphics card I bought a while ago. At the time, I was totally not into PC gaming and took basically no interest in the discs, so have never tried to install them. Having found these now, I'm really hoping I can install these without any nasty DRM latching onto my system.

Does anyone know if these are heavily-laden with DRM?

Both seem to be using SafeDisc.
SafeDisc for POP:SOT and Tages for XIII, if i'm correct. But i think that the protection might depend on the region.

Tages is only for Russian versions of XIII.

If XIII is patched to the final version, it's possible that the copy protection was removed entirely. At least that's the case with all of the releases I know.

There seems to be a Safedisc removal patch, but I'm not sure where to download it.
Found it here, along with an unofficial one.

Yep, 1.3 is the one I meant. I actually tried that on my original retail copy (the one that came on 4 CD-Roms) last year or so, and was delighted that I didn't have to swap discs anymore while playing.
Oddly, the copy protection systems for both Doom 3 and Prey were also removed with their respective 1.3 patches, if I remember correctly.

Disc swapping? Wasn't there an option to install the full game and only use the first disc as authentication?

I seem to recall that you'd have to change discs no matter what, but I'll just go and check.

Checking this seems to be harder than I thought, because the 4-disc version has trouble actually installing the game on Windows 7. Damn.

Try this solution.
Thanks for the info guys. So is there any sure-fire way I can know whether my version has TAGES or not? Does TAGES automatically install upon CD-insertion?

Also, if they are both only SafeDisk, does that mean no covert DRM will be installed on my system? Looking into SafeDisk it seems that the DRM resides only on the CD itself and doesn't install anything or change anything with respect to the OS?

According to Wikipedia, TAGÉS installs its drivers along with the software it protects. Their website provides a setup.exe that's supposed to remove those drivers if they are already installed (you can find it under "drivers"). Of course, I don't know how well this works, but, in theory, this means you should be able to install the game, patch it in case it's not already ver. 1.3 and then run the un-installation process to purge TAGÉS from your system.

Many thanks. It still doesn't seem to work for me, though. I might be doing something wrong. I'll probably try it again some other time.
