Add it to Windows defender exception list? Surely there must be a way.

It's flagged for a reason. It does something fishy and it has a chunk of code that is found to be malicious. People really shouldn't trust this patch. I'm sure it does what it promises, but might very well have a hidden DDoS client in there too or who knows what.

Let me see... someone creates a mod which improves an older game that few people play, in order to TAKE OVER THEIR MACHINES!

Sorry, but it lacks the evil genius vibe. More likely is that either 1. the download has been tampered with at whatever site you downloaded it from, or 2. it's been flagged as a false positive. My guess is number 2., but worth checking with other virus scanners and/or asking at the site you downloaded from.

The source code is there. You can even compile it yourself if you don't the executable.

Yes, it's flagged for a reason: false positive. Many antivirus program prefer to err on side of caution and flag anything remotely suspicious suspicious (like mods which modify executables). If you think anything flagged by an antivirus program is malicious, then you really have very little idea of how they work.

I know this is an old thread but its attached from Google so it needs a reply:

Yeah, this is stupid. Windows Defender is something that SHOULD be listened to, but it's not a brain. It just matches things. You will notice 99/100 times, it's fired off because the Publisher is set to "Unknown Publisher". It means the binary isn't signed, which proves the files integrity as untainted. (Fun fact: anyone can sign a binary in visual studio, it's just more effort than not doing it.)

So back to the point. Windows Defender often triggers on these "strange" downloads that aren't downloaded very often by many people. So could it carry a virus? Yeah... except the warning isn't "this has a virus" the warning is, "unrecognized app prevented from starting."

I just downloaded the exact linked file and got that exact same message. It's just a warning that it's an unknown publisher so make sure you __actually intended__ to load it.

If it's from a trusted dev/update maker then it's likely a false positive.
Well, to this day Rayman Forever is flagged as a virus on Windows.
