I am with Timppu on the expectation of the fight, but I don't follow boxing or mma.
I seriously thought this would be about some guy named Mayweather getting the role of Obi-Wan in his solo movie instead of Ewan McGregor.

I have no idea what this actually is about, but I'm happy I was wrong :D

I used to follow boxing, back when Mike Tyson was still a thing. He just made it interesting with his raging bull & no holds barred approach, usually trying to get his opponent down already in the first round. Also when I practised a bit of boxing myself, I also started to understand a bit better the tactics and techniques boxers were using, and it wasn't mere "yeah two guys punching at each other, fun?" like it was for me before that.

I originally watched some MMA (UFC mainly I guess)... but at some point I just started feeling uneasy with its violence, go figure. Not sure why I didn't have this problem with boxing, maybe it feels "cleaner" even though boxers may die on the ring too and get severe brain and nose damages. Nowadays I don't watch boxing either as there is no Mike Tyson.

EDIT: Yeah I read somewhere that Mayweather won with a technical knockout on the tenth round or something. Good for him I guess, now he is retiring right? That amazed me a bit though, 40+ people still doing great in boxing matches, but maybe they avoid difficult fights against 20+ guys then? There should be some elderly league for evne older boxers like 60+ or 80+.

tinyE: And once it is over, can we please kick these two assholes off the face of the planet? The way they treat women and sling racial slurs you'd think they worked in the White House.
You do realize that women actually LOVE being treated bad from rich celebrities including Donald Trump.
Females love bad boys.

And what's wrong with throwing racial slurs?
It's part of human nature.

Yeah, the Tyson days were pretty much when I also enjoyed watching the heavyweights fight...he was such a wrecking ball for a while. Also enjoyed the Sugar Ray and Hagler fights as well back then. Anyway, if you're interested timppu, here's the highlights from the fight last night.

Amy chance they'll try a rematch MMA-style?

Thanks, that saved me a lot of time, not having to watch full 10 rounds. Seems like McGregor sometimes got some good punches in, and you can see his MMA background how in many cases he instinctively tried to get to the back of his opponent.

Mayweather just then kept his package together all the way to the end, while McGregor started to get sloppier and sloppier (after a strong start)?

I didn't see the whole fight either, but a couple friends of mine did. Yeah, I certainly don't think McGregor has anything to be ashamed of. I noticed that as well....you could see him holding himself back (sometimes, not so much, lol) when he had Mayweather's back. It had to be frustrating for him at times for sure...but to his credit, he stuck to the rules of boxing. He lasted a lot longer then I would have bet he would have, were I a betting man. I seriously doubt Mayweather would last much past a round fighting CM under UFC rules, but then he was not the one going around saying he could kick McGregor's ass at his own game. For the record, pretty much everyone I have talked to (that saw it live), said they enjoyed watching the fight, and felt they got their money's worth, so I guess there's that; and both fighters are richer than f*#k now.

I don't know about that, Macgregor kept going for rabbit punches despite multiple warnings. There's really no excuse for it as they're illegal in MMA as well as boxing and he's lucky the fight was worth so much or he'd have likely been disqualified given how often he did it. I'm pretty sure he was trying for kidney blows in some of the clinches too, especially when he got behind.

I watched the whole thing and it was pretty obvious from the first round that Mayweather would win. Macgregor might have been up on points early on but you could tell that Mayweather was just analysing him and letting him wear himself out, relying successfully on his superior stamina and his world class defense and slips. Macgregor did get a few good, strong, early hits in but none of them really seemed to phase Mayweather and at one point he took a full strength straight punch to the nose and he just stepped back, grinned and brought his defense back up. I'm surprised Mayweather didn't go for more body blows though as Macgregor almost entirely ignored his entire torso when it came to defending. Macgregor also kept leaving the left side of his face open even after Mayweather started to focus on it & that's ultimately what did him in.

Not a big fan of either fighter but it was entertaining anyway. I do think Mayweather could have ended it as early as the 7th if he'd wanted though.

can't really describe the fight any better than this.

As for the rabbit punches, and this is not an excuse, the guy has been trained his whole life to hit his opponents anywhere and anyway, with any part of the fist and or foot. There was no way he was going to just stop this, even if he tried. Should he have been disqualified after the third warning, probably. I watch A LOT of boxing and I've seen fights stopped with less blatant punches and fewer warnings, however I don't think anyone believed his illegal pinches were ultimately going to save him anyway, and this wasn't a real fight to begin with, it was a exhibition/money grab (which I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH) so it was let go.

richlind33: There's no question that McGregor can win. He's definitely strong enough to manhandle Mayweather the way Duran did with Leonard, so how the fight's reffed is a fairly big factor. Both fighters are brilliant when it comes to execution, but McGregor can knock you out with one punch. Mayweather, however, has a big advantage re stamina.
I think you're right about the role the ref played in this. He kept harping on McGregor about illegal punches where as he only warned Mayweather once or twice about ducking his head and turning his back to McGregor. In boxing that's not allowed, in MMA that's just plain stupid. I was actually hoping that McGregor would lay into Mayweather once or twice when he did that to show Mayweather he couldn't just go into his little hidey hole like that. I also feel that McGregor deserved to be knocked down, not have the fight called while he's still on his feet.

I thought the ref did an excellent job, given the circumstances. He stayed on top of the hammer-fisting, which was obviously instinctual, but didn't influence the outcome. If I recall, there were about 30 seconds left in the round when the fight was stopped, and yes, Mcgregor *might* have stayed on his feet until the bell sounded, but that's a lot of punishment considering mayweather's precision and McGregor's almost non-existent defense. So a good call, IMO, and I suspect Mcgregor feels the same way.
