Wow! I had these games in my backlog. On your recommendation I started to play the tutorials of the second part and the game seems to be really complex. I'm really intriqued.

Well, I usually care only for (single-player) campaigns in RTS games, not skirmish (nor multiplayer). So yeah I was referring to the campaigns. I hated it that when I finally was making progress in the battle (conquering enemy capitals while fending off enemy hordes from my towns), I simply ran out of time, and lost the battle because of that. Phuck that. Sure AoE also had some time-limited missions, but as far as I could tell, in RoN all the campaign missions were like that (hard to tell since I couldn't even win the first battle due to the time limit, and I stopped playing at that point).

To me skirmish basically is multiplayer, but against the computer AI. It is a bit like playing multiplayer maps against computer bots in FPS games. If I play a single-player game (be it RTS or FPS, or whatever), I rather play a proper campaign where the missions and maps are designed specifically for the single-player experience, maybe there is a story joining the different missions/levels together (like in Starcraft or Halflife 1-2) etc.

Same for Starcraft and Age of Empires, I've only played their single-player campaigns, several times (and loved it). I think I once tried Starcraft skirmish against the computer, but I didn't like it at all.

If a game available on GOG is not a requirement, I double JinseiNGC224's recommendation of Armies of Exigo.

Actually, that was how I got through most of the game. While the top units were big and slow, they could also take and dish out an arse kicking of their own. The problem though is the AI tends to mash together a bunch of units and hurls them at you. When you know what their route is and if they pass through a choke point, it was pretty easy to cut them off there before going through it yourself. When they start to retreat, move your own big units though. Even if there were a lot of enemy units sitting on the other side of the choke point, the big units had enough hit points to muscle through. The auto cannon, barrage tank and missile crab could also shoot while on the move which helps quite a bit.

Late game though, I didn't see any point in using any infantry units except for the sniper / crazy harry. Infantry units had too few hit points, poor range and speed and really couldn't survive with all the heavy units running around. They were dog meat to static defenses too, veteran status or not. However, for maps where you didn't have a home base, veteran infantry units were vital.

If you were referring to multiplayer games, I'll take back everything I said.

Oh ya, i 4got abt this 1 which is available over here on GOG. This is pretty much like a souped-up version of C&C Generals with better graphics. Dun 4get it's expansion Act Of War: High Treason as well. ;)
