Hi I have tried all the suggestions I have found on these pages and none of them have got the game to run, I am left with a black page on the starting screen and that's it so I have now given up with the game and am hoping to get a refund somehow

Before you give up, try these.
Just out of curiosity, how did you reach 1.5 hours game time if the starting screen is black? That seems a bit much without being able to at least spend time in extensive options menus...
Thats unfortunate that you couldn't get it running. I just read a PCgamer article the day this was posted where someone made a mod that up-rezes The Longest Journey. Seems to be similar techniques used in the modding community to update the graphics of Final Fantasy 9 on PC.

I remember The Longest Journey taking some tweaking to work on modern OS's. Hope you get it worked out.

Hey, you'll have to work with GOG Support first to try to get the game running. However, if you and they working together can't get it running, then you'll be eligible for a refund (assuming you submit the Support request within 30 days of purchase)

Or touch and hearing. Like any blind person. No?
It will be the longest journey to get the refund.

You first need to work with the GOG support to try fix that issue, and failing that, you get the refund.
I had a similar problem, I mean the Black Screen, I found a solution in the internet first, but latest game update from GOG works fine for me and I can play now.

What is your OS?

If you are encountering technical problems, writing to our Technical Support will help you out with your problem :) If they are unable to help, you will get a refund.

Because it works the first time then it never runs again so it gets really frustrating and I have contacted the support team now and they have told me to try everything I have already tried as in direct x, run as administrator and I am guessing that's what is in the support. I looked at that first

I have tried but unfortunately they haven't suggested anything new

The Longest Journey can now be played on ResidualVM https://www.residualvm.org/
On top of that, using ResidualVMm you can also use the superb fan-made HD patch: https://tljhd.github.io/

If what they suggested hasn't worked then tell them. They'll either suggest new things or give you a refund. Personally, I'd suggest not giving up on the game until you get it running - it's a great game and worth the trouble.

Try tomimt's suggestion of using ResidualVM.
