True - but in retrospect, I think Germany took responsibility for having acted evil, while the US still largely belives that their attack was somehow different from that of any other extremist group who targets civilians.

At that point of the war, anyone in a position of power was probably emphatically too numb to register the war casualty reports as anything other than pieces of paper with numbers on them, adding a few hundred thousand to already hundreds of thousands that died in the fire bombings, for instance, didn't seem too regrettable. You can bet a few other emotions can be mixed in there, revenge, pride, anger, frustration, and no doubt an erection at the godlike show of power you could now wield in a single relatively small package.
