Thanks, added! I'm happy that this game has finally arrived on GOG!
it's absolutely not FOCUSED on animals, but besides plenty of marine animals I wanted to show you the cutest dog appearing in Nightmares from the Deep 3 - if you don't care for a minor spoiler. THis game is currently delisted but who knows if it will come back in the future, maybe as a remaster.

that dog is the cutest thing - there's a lot of marine life in the series but you can't call those "characters"- there are fish people - but it's a lovecraftian curse, a mermaid, a kraken, all the pirate magic paraphernalia but no main charaters who are real life animals other than that dog the is recurring in a section of the game.
Death and Taxes

You can customize your grim reaper to look like an anthropomorphic humanoid cat, but that's not why I'm mentioning this game. There's a character in the game, Lady Pawdington, who plays a very significant role starting with that fact that every time you meet with Fate, she's there.

There will be a time where you can interact with Lady Pawdington directly, and it is advantageous to be on her good side. I can give more info, but we'd be going into spoilers. However I will say that at least one ending does involve you hanging out with her.

Thank you very much, added this game too!

By popular demand, I've finally added the "Dragons" section, so those who want to can refer to that additional list, and it remains separate for those who don't consider them animals in the strict sense. I need everyone's help, though; dragons are often depicted on the covers of many fantasy games, but aren't really present in the game, so I'm waiting for advice from those who have actually played them!

Dragon games -

DragonStrike -- Dragon flight simulator from 1990 that uses the D&D Krynn setting and takes place during the War of the Lance. The player character is a human knight riding on a dragon where your weapons are your dragon's breath and your lance. This game is pretty much vaporware in that you can play it online, but there's nowhere to obtain it if you don't already have it.

Balrum - There are three dragon NPCs in this game, one of which shows up in the opening intro. Although they are significant, your meetings with them are short. Going into more details is heavy on spoilers.

Neverwinter Nights - Chapter three of the original campaign involves dragon eggs being stolen and as a result, there's encounters with three dragons: Akulatraxas (female, green), Gorgotha (female gold) and Klauth (male red.) The two female dragons want you to do whatever is necessary to make Klauth stop. There is another section of chapter three that involves a white dragon. Shadows of Undrentide has a white dragon, Tymofarrar, in the first chapter who is the master of the Deekin the Kobold bard. Wyvern Crown of Cormyr also has a dragon, Wyvernvapor, that you encounter briefly.

Dragons can show up elsewhere, such as randomly generated enemies in Infinite Dungeons. The ones that I specifically mentioned are all NPCs that you will have conversations with.
