Jinini: Not sure if its overclocked, I dont think it is, how do see this pls? But also, why would that afffect only cutscene stuff and only in some games then?
This is the only thing I can find with overclocking stuff in my nvidia panel, I dont remember ever changing anything here:
https://ibb.co/Fkgpbxd6

Since u mention the not enough voltage stuff, would me charging powerbanks same time I play affect it like this?
But then again, why only during some cutscenes, and in some games and not always? My electricity is problem from the powersocket?
I have def charged powerbanks b4 tho without this happening and for many yrs but its worth testing, i will unplgu all uneeded and see if it crash again when I sit down in a bit:)
If the system it's not overclocked then it doesn't matter, my bad.

The voltage I was refering to is not the house voltage of the sorts but the converted (several times) voltage that the GPU core need to sustain determined frequency. The CPU, RAM, VRAM and other components works the same way, the higher the frequency, the more volts it needs generally speaking.

When overclocking/undervolting or with older degraded hardware (GPU intensive used for crypto mining are a good example) it's very common to crash on changing power state, like starting or exiting the game, pause menu or cinematics, instead of intensive 3D scenes.

Sorry if this sounds a bit over the head but the symptoms are very similar. In your case, if the stability issues only started after installing a new system, well, the issue must be software related...

Native Linux currently, I tried with the windows one briefly at first but since it also did that sort of lagging stacato thing on the first 2 startup scenes b4 title screen, I thought it would be the same regardlesss. But I will give it a proper try too one of these days and see!

avatar
Jinini: Will look and post if i see it next time it crashes ty:)
avatar
dnovraD: Oh, and it may not be an actual crash. You can either try jumping to a different tty, (CTRL + ALT F1-F6) or the magic SysReq REISUB combo, to see if you can rattle the system into a savable/rebootable state cleanly.
I didnt know about the sysreg stuff. I will look at that and see if i can figure it out ty. The other thing I have tried and it never responsd to that either when it does it:s

Hmmm. It does sound kinda like what happens tho if u say that can happen.
I was just looking around for overclocking stuff and it says u can do it also from the BIOS. I will take a look at this what it says there after dinner. I dont remember messing with anything there in that regard but will look!

A few HIGH quality pics of some of the BIOS settings. Everything is pretty much set to auto or default, but that power saving one is disabled, not sure if thats default or me and if could be this?

I honestly dont remember everything i have tried by now for all these games to this date, a post here suggest try this, a random comment mention this or that so I tried that, nothing worked.
But what i DO remember trying, mainly for Subnautica since HK only just started happening with this + some of this also for Stranded Sails:

Changed and tried multiple resolutions and windows systems such as win 10 win 8 win xp, through the winetricks settings in Heroic and Lutris or default. I tried virtual desktop option too. I remember my old Steam version of HK I ran without steam only worked with Virtual DE on or it would stop responding in game. This is no issue on the GOG HK version tho.

I have tried all options that seemed remotely plausible in the Heroic/Lutris settings such as 'prefer system libraries' , enable/disable dxvk or dgvoodoo2 and all those graphic options i dont know what half of it but tried it anyway one by one.
What I havent tried fully maybe, is some of those in specific combinations or downloaded other specific lib stuff that I might need/miss, but I dont know about this stuff well enough to know where to even begin.
I have also installed all those ms visual c++ libraries through the launcher I use for the game, also did dibbly squat. But maybe there are other ms libs I shuold try tht is related to media stuff?
I also send in 'report game not working' logs for lutris/heroic.

I remember that the Subnautica game file that now dont work, worked fine when I was using Manjaro bk then. I have since changed around a few times, and it never worked on CachyOS or the current EndeavourOS. I cant remember if I tried the game when I was using Garuda but I think not.
Maybe Manjaro has something specific the others dont?
Or it cold be a total coincidence! I dont think this has anything to do with it tho tbh.

What I DID notice for Hollow Knight last night tho when messing with a few things, is that vsync ON is NOT good for that game at all, it gives me a delay in movement. FPS cap ON is the way to go in that game.
This usually feels like the opposite in most other games and I normally play with vsync ON whenever possible, tho at the same time I also tend to limit FPS to 60 where possible.
But in HK u cant do both, its one of the other,
My screen is a standard 1920 1080 60hrz, no fancy stuff:)

Ty for trying so far!:)

I really hope I can sort this out, and especially get Subnautica working b/c I miss it so very much.
But I refuse to rejoin that other platform for it ;o
I could pirate it ofc and try that way but Im not a fan or believer in this approach and would really hate to have to be forced to do that and I have so far resisted trying for 4 yrs or so.
Even tho I did alr pay for the game ofc so I guess one could argue its less of a moral issue in this case, but Im not happy about that thought + there is also the risk of malware etc too and my baby is precious. I curse enough everytime EOS manage to sneak in and the paranoid me panics and feel like doing a real life name change every time xD

Then I suggest giving a try to ./play.it. This is not yet another games client/launcher/downloader/DRM/whatever, but a native packages generator. It turns your GOG installer into native Arch Linux packages, that you can then install with pacman.

For Unity games, including Hollow Knight, it applies a couple tweaks that could have a positive impact on overall stability.

PS: I’m not in for the gift copy of Silksong, I’m far too bad at action-platformers to enjoy it.

I have heard of this from another unrelated post previously but have yet to try this.
Ive been very happy with Heroic and Lutris so far and feel/think they have a very good all around needed library and ready to go setup overall.
But ur right, its worth giving a try, maybe for Subnautica too even tho its not a GOG version.
I will look at this soonish (just started Silksong so forgive me if im absent for the next 3 yrs ;D
Joking, I will check bk in a few days, or b4 if i get new new crash that show something in that log!

Sidenote, for comparison.
The new Silksong I just loaded up which has the same 2 loading text cutscene stuff that HK does, does not do that slight lag/stacato thing. It looks and feels smooth and right so far all around in this game.
And they are both GOG native versions.

A game installed from packages generated by ./play.it is handled like a game installed through your distribution repositories, so if your launchers can handle games provided by Arch Linux then they can handle games installed that way too.

As I said, ./play.it is not a launcher, it is not replacing Heroic, Galaxy, Lutris or Steam. You don’t need to use a launcher of any kind with games installed from ./play.it-generated packages, but nothing it preventing you from doing so if you wish.

Hello again:)
Ive just been trying for the past hour to try some of all these new things and I was trying to dl and install play.it but I keep getting error no matter if I try the git or the aur version:s

I can see from that link to the other thread that ur actually the dev of this one, so Im thinking u must know a fair bit about it lol:)
Can u tell me how to dl this so I can give it a try? Wouldnt mind hecking it out regardless to see what it is!

Im getting the annoying 'manual intevention exit 4' error, and I just searched around for solutions and the only thing Im getting is soemthing with makepgk but I admit i enver use this way and wouldnt know how to tbh, im a noob in some areas still and always just use the yay or pacman when posible :D

System is updated ofc. If u got any suggestion I welcome it!

Don’t use AUR for ./play.it, packages there are outdated and unmaintained, it’s not surprising they do not work.
On Arch Linux and derivatives you should install it from git, following the instructions from our documentation: https://doc.dotslashplay.it/install.git.en.xhtml

What you need to install is the core software (obviously) and the platform games collection.
Ty:)

I just installed all of this in the link and the game collection stuff, apart from the vv221 one(didnt work), but I think Im a big doof, it keep saying play.it i not here but it is:s

After it installed it all which looked right with the make command from the link u sent, it just keep saying play.it isnt there?

alice@alice-systemproductname ~> play.it ~/home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow Knight/game/Hollow Knight
fish: Unknown command: play.it

No clue what im doing wrong and how to fix this sry ><
I did as it says here at the top

https://doc.dotslashplay.it/install.git.en.xhtml

git clone --branch main --depth 1 https://git.dotslashplay.it/play.it play.it.git
cd play.it.git
make
make install

Then i installed the collections into that main folder after.

git clone --branch main --depth 1 https://git.dotslashplay.it/games-action play.it-action.git
cd play.it-action.git
make install

Then bk to main play.it folder to install the next one etc etc.

Is this wrong?
Sry im not an expert at this kind of stuff which is why I love programs like Lutris which just works, untill it doesnt xD

What you did is all good, but I suspect your interactive shell (fish) won’t find the new command until you restart your current session.

Try running ./play.it like that, so fish knows where it should look for the new command:
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
play.it ~/some/path/to/hollow_knight_1_5_78_11833_51218.sh

That worked ty, at least to recognise its there!
Altho as soon as I shut the term down its back to not recognising it again next time I open it :s
How to make this permanent if pos? Cause thats annoying lol and feels like it shouldnt happen?
Is this a common thing for make files or is it just my fish terminal that smells fishy?
I tried restarting pc ofc.

However, it still wont run the game files and keep saying error, I have tried to look up stuff around this but not really finding anything sry ><
I tried both file types.
Also tried through the Lutris installed files that I just did fresh instead of imported version from Heroic.

alice@alice-systemproductname ~> export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
alice@alice-systemproductname ~> play.it ~/home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow Knight/game/Hollow Knight

alice@alice-systemproductname ~ [1]> play.it /home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow Knight/start.sh

Error:
"/home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow" is not a valid file.

alice@alice-systemproductname ~ [1]> play.it ~/home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow Knight/start.sh

Error:
"/home/alice/home/alice/Games/Heroic/Hollow" is not a valid file.

The below are the Lutris installed version/path:

alice@alice-systemproductname ~ [1]> play.it ~/home/alice/Games/gog/hollow-knight/start.sh

Error:
"/home/alice/home/alice/Games/gog/hollow-knight/start.sh" is not a valid file.

alice@alice-systemproductname ~ [1]> play.it ~/home/alice/Games/gog/hollow-knight/game/Hollow Knight

Error:
"/home/alice/home/alice/Games/gog/hollow-knight/game/Hollow" is not a valid file.

Am I missing something installed to recognise them from play.it? :s

As is shown in both the documentation and my previous message, you need to give ./play.it the path to a supported game installer. Like your GOG installer for Hollow Knight:
avatar
vv221: play.it ~/some/path/to/hollow_knight_1_5_78_11833_51218.sh
From the error you get, you are not giving the path to an unsupported file (the error message would be explicit about that), you are actually not giving the path to a file at all.

If you don’t know how to write that correctly, start by writing play.it, then a space, then drag and drop the game installer into your terminal. It should automatically write its full path in the terminal, then you can run the process with Enter.

If a restart did not help, your problem is with fish. Since I don’t know about that interactive shell, I won’t be able to tell you how to fix it. Using a regular interactive shell like Bash, such problems do not happen.

If you need keywords to help you search how to fix that: you need to add a custom path (~/.local/bin) to fish $PATH environment variable.

Hmm, so the .sh can only be the one from the direct GOG offline installer or the regular, and not the start.sh file or the other native ones u get after installing it through Heroic/Lutris?
They also say .sh etc and was under the impression u could just use play.it to run whatever game file u had?:)
B/c that never worked and keep getting me error even tho the path is there.
So I just tried by the offline installer .sh file and its a little different now at least, likes its considering cooperating lol.

I was giving it a path tho I thought, but maybe to the wrong .sh file then since nothing worked for the other ones?
I did try drag and drop also yes:) And regular right click on the folder path copy location and then paste that way, it doent seem to take on those files.

See pics, the Heroic install files has a few executables, one is the script version, which I thought could be used with ur program, but if not I misunderstood that too sry :) :)
But I cant make it recognise a path to those as valid files vs the other .sh file directly from GOG without the launcher installs first so im asuming it HAS to be that one only.

I moved the file from my remote drive for my offline installers to my active game folder.
But when trying all this with this new .sh file it said tmp folder was out of space and it wouldnt get further than the
play.it '/home/alice/Games/Hollow Knight playit/hollow_knight_1_5_78_11833_51218.sh'

I have tried various versions of ' and ~ etc.
Im trying the bash Konsole terminal now and its seem to know that play.it exists now without any trouble.
I tried that command there too and it gave me that tmp space error.
It just hangs now when I try it after clearing my paccache and such. There is plenty of disk space btw.

If I do it now to this file location it just hangs and nothing happens:

[alice@alice-systemproductname ~]$ play.it ̈́/home/alice/Games/Hollow Knight playit/hollow_knight_1_5_78_11833_51218.sh'
>

The ~ version that is on ur site does not work in the bash terminal and gives the no valid command errors.

I just spent an hour just trying to figure out this new tmp space stuff how to change and then it said it could be dangerous so I ran away fast lol, + some other various stuff, and getting no where.
Im really not gd with this kind of stuff so maybe its too complicated and advanced for me sry ;( ;(
And sry for all the time u spend on this, I appreciate it!

Addtionally i just tried to do a clean install with Heroic (backed up save files) of both HK and Silksong just to see if it was still issue, and it still does that odd slight lag/stacato thing on the first 2 loading scenes in HK on the Linux version.
But Silksong has no issues at all on the native version with the same 2 scenes. I have yet to give the windows version of HK a proper try but will do it.

I dont get it lol :S

Is that the following error?
Error:
The path set for temporary files storage has not enough free space: /tmp
An alternative path can be provided with --tmpdir.
This free space check can also be disabled using --no-free-space-check.
As written, it means there is not enough free space in /tmp to host a copy of Hollow Knight during the package building process. You can run the command by giving it an alternative path with more free space, for example:
play.it --tmpdir /var/tmp (…)/hollow_knight_1_5_78_11833_51218.sh
