Any Linux tech savy's here?

Im having a weird issue where a few select games only sometimes does a crash on cinematics and cutscenes, and I can hear the sound but nothing is responsive and my pc has to be force shut down ><

The games run just fine otherwise and apart from these 2 games and 2 b4 this long ago that I also never got working (both with known issues on this) I still to this day dont know what to look for to be begin to solve this.

I feel like im missing a specific lib, or something?
Sure im on older setup by now but its fine and I have no issues otherwise even on demanding games and its only these few games out of hundreds so far that does it, and its only with cinematic/cutscene stuff.

I can see from searching that many ppl over the last 5 yrs or so, in many different games and both poor and highend setups suffer from this, with no real solution to it yet that I can find><

The games I have trouble with so far(Linux user):

-Stranded Sails white screen on startup cutscene stuff b4 title screen. Known issue since beginning for many, I still never solved to be able to play it.

-Subnautica, crash as soon as the first warning cutscene stuff arive b4 title screen. Also a known issue for some seemingly on both Linux and Win, that I still didnt solve and not been able to play it since on my Linux setup, vs back when I was on windows and I miss this game terribly ;(

-Lumote the Mastermote Chronicles, last week I played this and had a major game freeze then pc crash with several reboots and logouts, first time ever and it happened right after a cinematic panout then when it panned bk in it froze, skipped backwards to previous lvls in stacato, then everything crashed O.o. See my post/review for more info if u want on that.

-Hollow Knight. Playing this now (not new) and had zero issues bk on steam, on both windows and Linux. This time tho, its crashed alr 3 times now where Im forced to shut pc down b/c nothing responds. I can hear sound, caps and numlock etc responds but nothing will do anything. All 3 times also happened on cinematic/cutscene stuff. The startup 2 small loading stuff b4 title screen also kinda go stacato and feels like it lags. the game etc runs flawlessly and it only happens sometimes!
The third time it just crashed now and made me make this post, was after a bench save, and on moving to the zone on the right of it, as soon as I changed zone screen went black but sound kept going, had to force a shutdown again.

Ive reached a point where I will pay to get this solved lol!
SO! I will gift a copy of Silksong standard edition to the first who is able to provide me with a working solution to these problems for:
Subnautica (got the steam version but playing without steam (no longer use steam at all) it used to work but now doesnt for past 3 yrs or so).
And for Hollow Knight.
(know what ur talking about pls for Linux, dont just copy paste what ive prob alr tried and seen myself ;D )

Since I finished Lumote alr its nvm for tht game, and Stranded Sails, if u know what that is sure gimme, I would love to check that out too:) Ive got steam version for that one too, but maybe i will buy it here too and see if its also issue here.
But HK and Subnautica is prio.

I suspect some sort of media lib or something or another is missing. Or a unity thing?

Everything is updated ofc, Im running with Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris, manual load also doent work.
Im on Arch Linux EndeavourOS Plasma6 on a gtx970 (which is fine and not the issue since ive played 3 of them just fine on it b4 ;))

Like I said, its weird cause it only affects the cinematic stuff?!?
I play many games that work fine of all kinds, also with cinematics, so im really pulling my hair out for these games and fear I will see more of it again in other games if I dont get this resolved.
Its worth noting that I have reinstalled distro and changed it too for the first ones mentioned which has being going on 4 yrs now, and it also didnt work on new/reinstall so :s :s :s

Anyone got a clue where to start?

Hit me lol im desperate now.

PS Im not sure how gifting works here and region locks etc so it might not work for all? Im in EU/Denmark.

Also PS I blame Trump.

-Edit typos

It sure sounds more like a hardware problem than software. (disable any overclock if possible because this to me sounds exactly like a crash due insuficient voltage either on the CPU or the GPU, specially the GPU)

That said, can you provide a bit more info, like what system are you using and how are you launching the games (via Steam?). Listing the basic hardware configuration might also help.

My recommendation is to create some sort of log and check what is happening. For example, if you are launching via Steam, using the "PROTON_LOG=1 %command%" launch option will create a log file on your home directory. If you are running a native game you can launch it via terminal and check.

Also, making sure your post is a easy read for non native english speakers might also create less misunderstandings.
I know it's annoying to type on the phone, or in a hurry but at first I didn't understand what BK means. It's a typo and you mean B4, right?

Sorry, I've missed this line somehow O.o

Internet says that clicking "report a problem running this game" opens a log you can check.

No limitations to gifting here. On the checkout page, add a checkbox to "Gift this order", fill in your own email address - you'll get a gift code (both on the result screen after payment, and in your email, and you can look it up in your orders history), which you can send to anyone else here via chat.

As for the crash - I sadly don't have any of the games you're having trouble with, nor ever experienced the same with other games, so no useful leads.

Have you searched for error logs? With a bit of luck there'll be some useful lead in there. Try both in the game directory, wherever the game saves its user data, and general system log. (Wait ~5 minutes after the crash before rebooting, so you can easily recognize the final activity from before the reboot.)

Not sure if its overclocked, I dont think it is, how do see this pls? But also, why would that afffect only cutscene stuff and only in some games then?
This is the only thing I can find with overclocking stuff in my nvidia panel, I dont remember ever changing anything here:
https://ibb.co/Fkgpbxd6

Since u mention the not enough voltage stuff, would me charging powerbanks same time I play affect it like this?
But then again, why only during some cutscenes, and in some games and not always? My electricity is problem from the powersocket?
I have def charged powerbanks b4 tho without this happening and for many yrs but its worth testing, i will unplgu all uneeded and see if it crash again when I sit down in a bit:)

I am launching/using Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris as I wrote :) Both have this issue :s
I also tried just the default exe file but thats also an issue:s

*bk* is short for *back' sry ;D

I am running with verbose logs alr in Herioc, but since I end up having to forcefully turn my PC off when it happens, I gues it wont register what the problem was b4 that?
I have before with subnautica reported the problem several times with the build in option yes.

I am not using steam at all anymore, dont ahve it or proton or anything ilke that on my machine anymore, I left it for good and came here instead :)
I do have all my 500+ games from that time on my drives tho and apart from a few they all work and run just fine without that horrid launcher lol.
I have gotten Subnautica to work with that steam file b4, without steam at all, so its also not a direct steam issue.

The only log I currently see for my HK game game through Heroic says this:

But since I had to kill it all by force Im guessing it wont get whatever was the cause for that on the log with it? Just like it dont save whatever saved time etc I got to update on my profile here whenever that happens. I can play it for 2 hours then out of nowhere it does that in seemingly random time and spot, I dont get it lol!

Ty for ur time:)

Oh ok ty!
But what about region price differences tho? The game might cost one thing in my country but another in Yemen, does it work that out automatically?

I have the launcher logs but since I end up having to force the pc shut I dont think it will watch whatever lead up to that on the Heroic/Lutris logs.
I will try to give it another play in a bit and see what happens next time and what it says if any:)

Jinini: But what about region price differences tho? The game might cost one thing in my contry but another in Yemen, does it work that out automatically?
For gifting, you pay the price in your region if it's higher than the US price, and otherwise the US price. (So for us in the EU, we mostly pay the same price as if buying for ourselves, and slightly more for a very few games where our usual price is lower than the US price. Someone in Brazil however (and presumably in Yemen) would have to pay a lot more when gifting than when buying for themselves.) It then doesn't matter where the recipient is located.

Another thought: Given how cinematics are the common thread among these crashes, I'm wondering if your system could be underpowered? (Though then I'd also expect crashes just during gameplay of graphically intensive games. Do you ever play such?)

For the logs: You could maybe try running a game which reliably crashes during an intro movie in a window (rather than fullscreen), and start it directly from the commandline (without heroic / lutris), with that commandline window positioned somewhere where it's fully visible. That has the highest chance of showing the culprit (if it's software), without you needing to have to hunt down the correct log file.

I remember trying this with Subnautica many times last time I messed with this, changing resolution with winetricks, it didnt work then at least :s
Maybe I can try take a vid of when it happens, it just cnt get past that first warning screen and shuts down.

I play anything from games like HK and other metroids, to 7 days to die, Metro Redux/Exodus(full of cinematic stuff), Rain World, The Expanse (lots of cutscene stuff but using UE).
Sure not all games I play can run on max settings, I do know my card has limits, but usually no issues at all on medium etc, and if there is its b/c the game is known poorly optimized from their end so even highends struggle :)

I have an odd suspicion its linked to unity somehow.
Does Journalctrl have anything useful in it?

I'm already suspecting that Arch's natural tendency to leap before looking may be cause, but then again I've been on boring old Fedora for upwards of 5 years without "needing" to reinstall.

Oh I didnt reinstall for that purpose only, I was just switching to a new Arch, I change aruond a bit sometimes, but its always Arch ;D

Can I paste all of what journalctl says safely? The top 2 lines says some command line and root user Id and system machine ID stuff at the very top + some numbers, Im afraid to get my metal box exposed ;D

Tell me pls how do I copy paste all of it, its split into sections to pan right cause it doesnt all fit, but if i save output it only ads what is on the first page?
Sry im a noob at this ><

There is no place it says 'crash' but there is a part that is greyed out evolving HK yes! but it expands to the far right argh lol /hides in shame

gogtrial34987: Try
journalctl --since=2025-09-01
and then scroll to the timestamp of a crash.

Also, it might help to trim it down to serious stuff with some filtering: journalctl -p 0..3

I'd specifically look for lines that say "err"/"error", or maybe "warn", rather than "crash". And really before you go look, trigger a new crash, noting the timestamp and waiting a couple of minutes before rebooting, so you can zero in on just the relevant lines for that specific time.

Jinini: -Hollow Knight. (…)
Are you playing the native Linux build, or the Windows one through WINE (or Valve’s branded WINE, Proton)?

Oh, and it may not be an actual crash. You can either try jumping to a different tty, (CTRL + ALT F1-F6) or the magic SysReq REISUB combo, to see if you can rattle the system into a savable/rebootable state cleanly.
