What can I say? Not much that hasn't already been said in a ton of different reviews that can be found everywhere on the net. Seriously search for either written or video reviews, there are literally dozens. The movie has received a lot of attention from critics many of which have bestowed tons of praise and with only a small number being harsher with it, criticizing some its perceived flaws. However every single one of them has unanimously heaped praise on its beautiful photography and gorgeous stop-motion animation.

My opinion (it'll be a brief one) is that the movie is absolutely gorgeous visually, and starts very strongly both with its character and world-building. But loses steam towards the end and uses a deus-ex to solve the final conflict, which felt like a cop out. However it was still a very enjoyable movie, both in script and in its visuals.

But that is not why I'm writing this.

As I said, the movie has received a lot of attention from critics. Unfortunately not half as much from the general public. One of the best animated features of the year once more struggles on the box office, barely able to make ends meet, while abominations like Angry Birds or the last Ice Age movie, or tiresome sequels continue to rake in the dough.

It personally offends me.

So I'm urging any of you who enjoy animation to go watch this one. Laika Studios needs all the help it can get, and this movie certainly deserves your ticket money unlike some others.

PS: Yes I'm aware that some of those sequels were actually quite good. But that doesn't change the fact that they're still sequels, and I have absolutely zero interest to revisit the same characters, whose stories I feel have already been told.

Unfortuantely that's pretty much always the deal. Beautiful stuff like this or the great Aardman animations never make nearly as much money as the ugly CG comedies and the boring Disney crap.

I'm very much looking forward to Kubo, in fact it's one of the few movies left this year that I hope can truly earn to be my "best movie of the year". Unfortunately it doesn't open here until December, so I have quite a while to wait :(
