StingingVelvet: It's amazing how few of them are clear improvements.
idbeholdME: This is unfortunately the case most of the time. Hard Reset Redux is basically a graphical downgrade, Serious Sam HD has content cut out due to engine limitations for gravity stuff. Metro 2033 Redux ruining the atmosphere and missing numerous things. I could go on like this for a while.
If anything, the original should ALWAYS remain available too. Or make it like the C&C remaster, where you can freely switch between the old and new (best case scenario IMO). And make the price reasonable since you are just mostly re-releasing something that was already out.
I might have tried KoA, but it being priced like a new AAA release means a looong wait until at least a 75% discount. Then maybe.
nightcraw1er.488: I briefly played AoE on the C&C remake, nothing wrong with them, didn’t see anything to make me go wow other than larger screen size. Perhaps some artwork or slightly different music means more to you. Perhaps the fact that I played them to death when they came out means I can’t see anything new. You can’t recreate a time gone by, do something original.
idbeholdME: Gotta give credit where it's due. The C&C remake actually added a lot of new stuff to the package. They even packaged in the original outtakes for the FMV movies. The main guy heading the remaster actually did research, went through EA archives, dug out the Westwood recording tapes etc. They contacted Frank Klepacki to remaster his old music and even make some new tracks. Plus you can freely switch between the old and new look.
C&C Remaster is actually one that I'd consider buying, if it were available DRM-free that is. Reasonably priced too. And I'm saying that as a person that basically never buys re-releases of old games.
Fair enough, I didn’t have much time on it, didn’t even check the sandbagging trick.
Resident evil 2 was also a surprise. Didn’t mind the monkey island ones either.
That’s really where it stops though. What happens was some 5 or so years back beamdog realised that all you had to do to make large piles of cash is to apply an existing mod, remove the originals and sit back. Since then it’s been an endless stream of remasters 99% of which are no improvement or downgrade.
Most decent old games had fans which already sorted screen sizes, graphic and content updates etc.
Here’s a though on a poll, bill long before Bethesda admits it can’t make a game and sells the engine and modding content through it creation club? A bit like choose your own adventure, but build your own game.
