I'm playing Doom on a PC running Windows 10 I'd like to use a joystick so I got a Thrustmaster USB joystick but it doesn't seem to work. Can I get some advice on what joystick will work?
would you consider ever getting a game pad?
You play an FPS game with a joystick? O.o How do you do that? Do you use a mouse with it?

that's why I asked about a game pad.

I guess he's playing the old Doom, that is very limited in movement freedom. I was thinking of Doom 2016 when I asked the question.
In case we're talking about "The Ultimate Doom" here:

Since it's a USB Joystick, DOSBox - which is what GOG's version of Doom runs in - should ne able to recognize it automatically.

I think what you might have to do is use the "Launch Settings" option in Doom's directory and in there, use the "Select Controller Type" menu to change the control method to "Keyboard + Joystick".

I originally played Doom 1-2 through with keyboard only (no mouse), but that was mainly because at least the default mouse config in Doom was just stupid. I mean, moving forward and backwards by moving your mouse, how stupid is that?

Plus, of course, precise aiming wasn't that important as the game had heavy auto-aim, and you couldn't even aim up/down.

Duke3D was the first FPS game where I felt using a mouse (instead of mere keyboard) really made sense. I originally started playing Duke3D similarly as I had played Doom, keyboard only, but at one point I tried mouse, and... BOOM! I instantly understood that was the way the game was meant to be played (and all FPS games made released after Duke3D).

Joystick in one hand, mouse or trackball in the other.
People used to try out a variety of controls before PC gaming sunk into wasd mouse and keyboard staleness.
Played with joystick and keyboard back in the old dos days and got pretty good at it. Just wanted to step back.
I don't see any "launch settings" choice in the options list.

With the joystick I could move forward and back with adjustable speed, look up and down, turn and fire all with just the right hand. Seemed to make it easier IMHO.

I've never tried a game pad. After going through all the levels of Doom, Doom II, and Quake, I realized I was addicted and it was eating up way too much time so I swore off all gaming (well, except for Freecell). I've never had any of the game systems like Nintendo, Xbox, etc. Used a steering wheel, shifter, and accelerator pedal for a while on a couple recing games, but that's it.
