I watched Chappie a few days ago and it was *meh*. :/
Cable Guy - weirdly enjoyable.
Watching random episodes of Hogan's Heroes on Youtube.

Breja: I'm just back from seeing it. I liked it, though it definately has it's share of problems. The visuals are great, but the story is very predictable and the characters, both good guyus and bad, are rather boring. There's zero chemistry between the main characters, and I didn't really buy their romance for a second. Also, the movie feels very unfocused, as if there's almost too many ideas, the whole, let's call it, "Rihanna episode" is entirely unrelated to the plot, could be cut without missing anything, despite taking a big chunk of the movie. It's a fun episode, but still.

But there's plenty of fun concepts, great designs, and the interdimensional bazaar heist part near the beginning was really clever and fresh. I actually regret it's set at teh movies beginning, it would have made for a more interesting climax than the rather by the numbers gunfigh/race to disarm a bomb.

Anyway, despite teh problems, it's fun and worth seeing on the big screen. Just don't expect it to measure up to the Fifth Element.
Thanks for letting me know what you thought about Valerian. I agree about the love story. In fact, my major gripe with the movie was the love story, although I should say that I generally don't care much for love stories in any movie. It often feels like it's there for no reason, perhaps just there to pander to a focus group (like when game devs think that *every* game needs multiplayer or something).

With that said, I have seen some good portrayals and the love story in Valerian could have been done so much better and more subtle. Now it was the weakest part of the movie and all that "you know you like me"-talk from Dane Dehaan just got tedious. His character felt quite bland and, actually, I thought that his love interest Cara Delevingne outshone him in the acting department and I don't often think about whether an actor is good or not, I only think about whether I like the character or not. Nice to see somebody famous who "tries to be an actress" and actually succeeds. Rihanna doing her little show felt like pure eyecandy, but I liked her role otherwise.

I liked your Twilight-link and reading the comments was almost as fun as seeing Michael Sheen chewing the scenery (Twilight is so anemic that doing so was the only way to get any nutrition, haha).

There are some great love stories in movies, but it's rarely the big action blockbusters. There it's usually like you said- just a token effort, usually bland and forced. That's one of the (many) things I liked about Wonder Woman so much - the romantic subplot works great, with real chemistry between two likeable protagonists who develop a believeable bond. Such a basic thing, and yet so hard to get right apparently.

I'm watching a documentary about Japan's Maid Cafes.
Just watched Twilight Zone: The Movie for the first time in many years. It holds up pretty well, although maybe that's not surprising since most of the movie just remakes classic episodes. The movie gets better as it goes along. The first one by John Landis is interesting but because it was truncated because of the helicopter accident, the story doesn't add up to much more than a "take that!" to a bigot. Spielberg's story is very well made but maybe too maudlin for some people. Joe Dante's is the most visceral part of the movie and has awesome effects by Rob Bottin. George Miller's segment is just so fun and has a great performance by John Lithgow.

It (the new one)

It's ok. The kids are all decent enough actors, and there are some pretty creepy and scary visuals. I don't quite get the rave reviews it's getting though. I mean, it's still a story about a demonic children-eating clown. Maybe in the book there's more to it, but here's that's pretty much... well, it (no pun intended). This really isn't some great coming of age story. And as a horror, while good enough, it has quite a few problems. It relies way too much on jumpscares and VERY LOUD MUSIC to scare you, and it can get way too goofy for it's own good at times. Whether it's Pennywise dancing near the end of the movie, or the musical montage of cleaning the bathroom coverd in blood, it's hard to go back to being scared afterwards. It's also a bit too long, with 135 minutes running time. The pacing is just off at times.

But still, it's not bad. For all the cheap jump scares there is some really scary and creepy stuff, there is no unnecessary gore... it's a "fun" horror flick. Not one I'm likely to revisit or recommend, but if you've got some friends to go with, you could do a lot worse (coughtdarktowercough).

Ugh jump scares :P I'll probably go see it nonetheless since I'm a huge fan of the original. Well, at least the first part of the original. The only really good part of the part where they're adults is when the lady goes to drink tea with the old woman. That part seriously creeped me out :P
Finding Dory

I can happily report that it's as lovable a film as Finding Nemo.

Just keep on swimming.

Thankfully the jump scares subside somewhat in the latter half of the movie. It's worst at the beginning, and feels a little as if the director was afraid that unless it establishes immediately that THIS IS TOTALLY A SCARY HORROR people are going to walk out.

And I have to say, I'm not really looking forward to teh sequel much. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I can't help but think that modern day setting and adult characters won't be nearly as fun. I also can't help but wonder if WB is having last minute emergency meeting about possibly splitting the second movie into two parts after this one apparently proved to be an insane box office success. It's either that, or they're getting rights to every King book they possibly can.

PATHETIC
Muppets from Space

For the third or fourth time. Don't know why, but I think this movie is brilliant! The highlight of each viewing is the lab rat scene:

Mad Max

Also for the third or fourth time. Still the best action movie I've ever seen.

I think almost all the Muppet movies are brilliant, though obviously some are much better than others (the Muppet Christmas Carol being probably my favourite). I was very happy that the two new movies were quite good too. I'm just worried about what will happen to the Muppets now, after the second movie's disappointing box office and the cancelation of their latest TV show. And the new guy doing the voice of Kermit just sounds wrong...

Much as I love the franchise, I don't think the first movie aged very well. It certainly doesn't measure up against it's own sequels.
The nightmare before Christmas (Blu-ray). Very good video quality for one of my favorite movies.
