Well, I blame myself. I just thought that perhaps these games from GOG and Steam might be able to be patched , as was recommended to me. I learned a valuable lesson. Unfortunately, being well into the game, I am reluctant to start over so I will just move onto the next game, which most likely will be Chrono Trigger. Thanks again to all of you for your help and suggestions. I really appreciate all of you!

CarChris: What I do for GOG's games is that when I finish a game, I copy the files in an external drive, and I keep them thus. Even if a newer version is uploaded, I don't change those files. I stay content with the game as it was when I played and finished it.
Please forgive me, but I am curious: what use do those save files have to you? It seems like a very deliberate practice.

Supposedly, an expansion may come along and you will be able to continue your adventure from that point onward, but I understand that you do that with all games. Or maybe tracking some side quest that you missed or something you could still unlock. If you mainly play RPGs, I can see some use.

Maybe it is my lack of game finishing skills that limit my perception of what this procedure of yours can enable.
