From what I've heard, the game I played to death a decade ago has gone through some changes in how you can play it. Where I probably just had a hard copy with a CD key (though I can't completely remember), now it's owned by Sega and has digital DRM attached to it. But I can't be completely sure on this, so I wanted to reach out to the community here to see if there is in fact a version, between the original releases, the gold releases, and another I believe, to know which one I could acquire and enjoy without the intervention of modern DRM. Or is this impossible?

I thought of Warhammer 40 k Dawn of War when I read a new article about how the mod community for it is still going strong. Apparently new races and armies have been made, in addition to their very own (cheesy) voice overs. You can check out the article here:

http://www.pcgamer.com/dawn-of-wars-modders-have-turned-it-into-the-ultimate-warhammer-40k-game/

So my question here is mainly pertaining to the game itself and if I can own it without modern DRM, though I'd like to know more details on how this DRM works for this game. All I've read is it's "changed".

Also, if anyone has checked out any of the mentioned mods in the article above let me know if they are any good. I played all the original expansions through Soulstorm and all previous and still couldn't get enough until I lost my discs.

When all else fails, I'll go to ebay and buy the originals I suppose ;)

Dawn of War's multiplayer was reliant on Gamespy. With the shutdown of the service, Relic decided to implement Steamworks on both Dawn of War games to restore the multiplayer. Later on, Sega released new retail versions of both games that require a Steam account for activation. Your only options if you want to avoid using Steam is either to purchase Dawn of War Platinum from GamersGate (which only uses offline serials like the Anthology version, but requires a workaround the first time you download it), or by buying a retail version. If you decide to go for the GamersGate option, then it will net you access to Dawn of War, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade. Soulstorm is also available on GamersGate, but uses SecuROM, so your only option for it is a retail copy.
