Doom has relatively hi-tech enemies while Quake has medieval one.

So Ranger who was sent into a portal in order to stop a mysterious enemy code-named "Quake".
Quake compromised the Slipgate by connecting it with its own teleportation system, using it to send death squads to the "Human" dimension in order to test the martial capabilities of humanity.
By doing this Quake gained (Learned? Stole?) some of the tech knowledge of humans.

Turned out that place was at Mars.
Years later humans went there and started to do their shit.
Something went wrong and "Doomguy" was sent to fix it.
Which took him DOOM franchise to fix that shit.

Few year later events of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars happen.

Right after that in Quake 2, Bitterman take part in "Operation Alien Overlord", a desperate attempt to prevent an alien invasion of Earth by launching a counterattack against the home planet of the hostile Strogg civilization. Most of soldiers die while Bitterman survives only because another Marine's personal capsule collided with his upon launch, causing him to crash far short of the landing zone.
It falls upon Bitterman to penetrate the Strogg capital city alone and assassinate the Strogg leader, the Makron.

In Quake 4 Rhino squad is tasked with spearheading the mission to finally secure the aliens' home planet Stroggos.
In the course of the invasion, the squad ship is shot down and crashes in the middle of a battle zone, separating Matthew Kane from his companions. Kane eventually rejoins his scattered team members and partakes in the assault against the Strogg.
At end after finishing the mission Kane receives word that he has new orders.

May be it's just my shitty imagination but story does make sense.
Thank you for reading!!!

It's probably you. I honestly don't think they put any thought into the "story" of Quake and Doom.

Edti: Or actually, due to my laziness and not caring for story theory, they might have come up with something basic while drinking a beer and not bothered to diversify over the different franchises. *shrugs*

It was actually specifically Carmack who didn't give a shit about story in id's games - and that's no wonder given the fact he mostly concerns himself with technological advancements as opposed to game design. That said, it was not Carmack who wrote those (fairly simple) stories and for all we know, there might be a lot more complexity there than meets the eye at the first glance. ... Or not. I guess we'll never know. I do like amrit's theory tho :-P

Too bad Enemy Territory: Quake Wars died too quickly and is not available anywhere but second hand retail copies :(
We can only vote for it here.

Well, they seem to have enough story for people to make theories of. That's already quite something, I'd say.

Why not submit the OP theory to the old ID crew? Aren't they making a new game now? They could just run with it and make it cannon. It's not like it would cost them much, just a couple references on their new game and there you go, IDverse.
Quake 3 brought everyone together. It's not inconceivable that they exist in the same universe.

Oh, right, with the fantastic story of "Immortal race have grown bored of all forms of entertainment except one thing, fights to the death, so they collect the best fighters from across the universe (multiple universes/dimensions? I don't quite remember) and put them in the arenas. And don't think you can just die and be done with it, they'll just resurrect you and put you up another round."

I bought the game in about 2002, and I was very much laughing at the three-sentence story back then too.
Doom and Quake. Stories? Stories? HEE to the HAW. Some crazy shit just went down in some lab/castle/teleporter facility and you have go kill shit dead with a shotgun. That's it.

What, do you guys want to go back to Doom Marine's time in high school and follow him around as he gets dumped by his girl friend? Or maybe back even earlier when he fell out of the fishing boat that one time during summer vacation? Why not a Doom sitcom? How about a Quake reality show where we dress up demons to look like old rich Hollywood scumbags. Wait... they do that already.

If only you could talk to the monsters.

The doom books are doing everything you just said and even more.
DOOM and Quake are separate universes, however their stories are extremely similar. The military dabbles in teleportation and portal technology, they open one up that allows the aliens to get through. You end up going in as the one man army you are and stopping them. Ranger is just a generic soldier, whereas Doomguy was sent there for patrol duty after punching his superior officer in the face, for refusing an order to fire on civilians.

As for Quake 2 and Quake 3? They also have nothing to do with each other or the first Quake even. You see, Quake 2 was originally going to be called something else, Paul Steed (RIP) wanted to call the game "WOR", but they ran out of time and had trademark issues so they decided to just slap "QUAKE 2" on the title and call it a day. Ever since then Quake has been one of the most disorganized franchises yet.

The only Quake's that have a continuing story line are Quake 2, to Quake 4, to Quake Wars. However, if you wanted to make a connection between one and two, there is a slight one! The various crates you see in Quake bear the Strogg symbol (the cyborg enemy of the second, their symbol is a skull with wings). Honestly it was probably just a reused asset, but it's fun to theorize that Shub-Niggurath's troops (the enemy of Quake) were stealing Strogg supplies.

Oh, so Quake is actually connected to Lovecraft's Mythos!

Yes, many of the monsters are directly inspired from those Mythos.

Other monsters like the Spawn (the annoying blue globs that blow up) and Vore (three legged homing missile thrower) are also inspired by Lovecraft designs.

Quake 2 switched that completely for a more Borg/Terminator inspired enemy.
