Theraputic: Been a loooooong while but for the sake of completion I would just like to close with the following. Communicated with GOG for a while and they did try but ultimately failed to solve my problem and offered a refund but because I really liked the game I persisted and solved it myself. All I had to do was to change from the 32 bit version of Windows 10 to the 64 bit and the game ran faultlessly!!! Much joy ensued. My sincere thanks and salutations to all you guys out there who offered your support and advice. Cheers.
Pillars, as well as many other games these days, is built on Unity. Unity requires 64-bit machines (technically, it can work, but no guarantees) . Your program was probably referencing invalid memory, causing it to crash.
I'm glad you got it working and glad you are now using 64 bit!
