It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Maybe some tooltips over those icons at the upper right would be a good idea? So clueless folks like me know what they represent?

Would be nice to have it disabled.

Whole site's still pretty darn borked for me. Hardly any images loading, account tab (and notifications) showed up once on the front page, not anywhere else, nor even there before or since, if I go directly to account URL I get the top menu but only the chat loads if I click it (and the library crashed the tab the first time)...

That one time the notifications did show up I got a bunch of threads there were new replies in, but couldn't middle click to open in new tab (see that was already mentioned in the very first reply here - basic and absolutely needed functionality), had to left click to open it in the same one, then wanted to open another new front page to see the rest and stuff back to not showing.

And yeah, I'll echo the idea that on a store you'd probably want to know about what's going on with your games even more than about "social" stuff. So to have all of that here but not the game updates is... odd.

elcook: Today we're rolling out the new notification system on GOG.com.
I do not know if this is related, but I got a reply in my topic today, clicked new notification icon, all worked.

But since that time I can't access my account page - there is no <my account name> tab on the bar and when I am accessing it directly (by using https://www.gog.com/account link) the page loads, but under my collection of games no single game is displayed and all I can see is "spinning circle" icon instead in this place.

It seems that I am logged in properly during this time because I can write posts as you can see.

I deleted all cookies, refreshed page many times, no help. When I delete cookies I can see "sign in" tab properly but after login this tab disappears and my account problem is back.

So, those few weeks™ are finally up.

I haven't checked out the whole thing yet, only took a look at what the icons are about, and clicked on one forum notification from ages ago, but a few things for the moment:

(1) What's with the tab-titles dancing as soon as one of your notifications is cleared? That damn thing won't stop until you switch focus to each and every open tab. Till the next notification clears, then it starts all over again.

Who thought this was good, let alone necessary, to have? Do the GOG devs keep only a single tab open?

It's very distracting, and has already become annoying. Is there a way (that I've missed somehow) to turn this useless visual effect off?

(2) gogtrial34987 is absolutely right that you need to restore basic browser/HTML functionality, because as forum notifications work now, it's pretty useless. It'd seem that GOG devs do indeed work with only a single tab, and must have never heard of multi-tabbing; can't explain the design and implementation choice they made otherwise.

(3) Opening a thread one has a reply in, makes the notification counter go down by one, But clicking on a notification, does not make the counter go down, even after the tab has fully loaded.

(4) What is the point of telling me that I have multiple replies in a thread, when clicking on the notification takes me to the very last (just like that cog on the forum itself), and I have to go hunting for the previous ones? Is it to make sure I will go looking for them?

(5) I have a notification about a forum reply that reads: "2 new replies in: Changelog". Which changelog thread would that be, GOG? At least the "My posts" page tells you in which game forum you have a reply in the respective changelog thread.

(6) Why is there no way to clear select notifications? Can't say I understand this "all or nothing" implementation. For all the updating and fiddling you guys do, and the time you invest on it, basic functionality and usability is lacking.

gogtrial34987: [...] but basic browser functionality enabled by a basic HTML foundation - like middle-clicking a link to open it in a new tab, or drag-and-dropping the link, etc - is broken. [...]
So it's right inline with the state of the rest of the forum, eh?
avatar
gogtrial34987: [...] (edit: got a chat that this was seen and should be fixed "soon".) \o/
I'd not hold my breath if I were you; they said soon™.

And why was this related privately via chat instead of publicly in, you know, the official GOG thread?

avatar
Lemon_Curry: I'll just repeat my comment from the other thread...

How come clicking the reply notification only takes me to the very last reply when there are more than one within the same thread?

Surely, it would make a lot more sense to take me to the first one* and then allow me to skip forward one by one.

*As is the case when clicking notifications in the 'Forum replies' section.
Come come, you didn't really expect that the new notification system would bring some new, actually useful, functionality with it, did you now?

Don't follow, could you elaborate?

HunchBluntley: I would've preferred the notifications to have been broken down like they were was previously -- with separate notifications next to "Friends", "Chat", "Forum replies" and, yes, "Library". Scrolling through a (potentially) long mixed list of individual notifications seems like it could be cumbersome. [...]
Good grief, did they really just dump all notification types together? They sure need to add some points to "organisational skills".

avatar
HunchBluntley: [...] Also, I hope individual future notifications will auto-clear from that list once the appropriate link is followed (I can't tell, as I only had past notifications, and I already cleared them); I hate having to clear lists like that manually, especially if the only option is "dismiss all". EDIT: To be clear, the option to clear individual notifications from the list would also be much appreciated.[...]
If what I'm experiencing is any indication, forum-replies notifications clear, at least from the total counter, as soon as you open the thread, not sure they clear from the list as well (didn't go back to check). But following the link to the post-reply you got does not make the counter go down.

drmike: Maybe some tooltips over those icons at the upper right would be a good idea? So clueless folks like me know what they represent?
The bell holds all forum and chat notifications you got, the tow little people show which of your friends are online, though since this came from Galaxy, it's not clear if "online" refers only to one being online on the site via browser and via the client, or if it also includes the cases of one playing a game via the client, or even the (most useless of all) case of the client simply running in the background on their system.

EDIT:

*reads post #33 and #34*

And it wouldn't be GOG rolling out something new without a bug hitting users at random.

Thank you, GOG!

Two other things:

The date in notifications displays only on revamped pages. Not a big thing, but it's a bit ironic that it doesn't for forum-replies when on... the forum.

Also, tags (bold, etc.) are broken in notifications. Just like they are on the forum when applied to hyperlinks.

elcook: [...] We’re keeping the previous game installer updates working exactly as they did, so you can check which games got updated in your „Library” view via the „Updated” filter (by My Collection) and the blue dots by the game’s title.
Not sure If you're aware of it, but for any updated game to show in the "Updated" filter, it actually requires it to be flagged as such. And this seems to happen more and more infrequently and randomly* ever since the beginning of summer.

The community is doing a much better and more reliable job at reporting updates, minor and major ones, and it's a shame you seem to have gotten comfortable with it.

*or so it looks to us as we've yet to figure out why a game with a changelog is flagged as updated, while another, again with a changelog, is not.

Still don't see why we're not getting notifications for game updates, given that the system, that triggered the notifications, remains the same.

elcook: Please note the new notification system is focused around social notices and offers relevant to you, and won’t show you a overdue list of all updated games you haven’t clicked on yet, not on the website, nor in GOG Galaxy. We’re keeping the previous game installer updates working exactly as they did, so you can check which games got updated in your „Library” view via the „Updated” filter (by My Collection) and the blue dots by the game’s title.
Thank you for offering an incomplete system, compared to the BE implementation, only a very few months after it! ;P Apparently games and their updates are not anymore a focus on GOG?

elcook: Today we're rolling out the new notification system on GOG.com. The goal is to keep track of your social activity, deals relevant to you, as well as major announcements we have for you.
The new system allows you to get a notification when there is a new reply to your forum post, when you receive a new chat message or when you get a friend request. If a game you have wishlisted goes on sale, expect to hear about it right away, too.
"deals relevant to you" ... "The new system allows you to get a notification" ...
Does that mean there will be options to switch off notifications which GOG might think are relevant for me but I do not consider as relevant?

About usability: Please change the links in the notification menus to HTML links so that the user has control how to open them! And at least I do not like the "blinking" page titles in the tabs and the added notification number in front of the titles. Please give me an option to stop that going wild nonsense.

avatar
HypersomniacLive: Do the GOG devs keep only a single tab open?
They must use only a single tab as opening a new tab does not show the still active notifications. So you cannot even work around the scripted links in the notification menu.

Please make the single announcements clickable (middle mouse button to open in new tab currently does not work) and removable from the list instead of just "Remove all". Then add notifications for game updates and everything is perfect :-P
Thanks for additional feedback regarding the new notifications! We're working on some small fixes, and we'll be adding the HTML functionality to notifications as well.

Lexor: *snip
I've sent you a PM about it, let me know!
The new forum notifications are a nice improvement, saves a few clicks.

And it's alive - notifications have HTML functionality, so you can open each notification in a new tab.
