The thing that struck me about the criticism of the 4th film is that it was mostly focussed on the aliens. So they don't like ludicrous things in their Indiana Jones movies and somehow didn't blink an eye at all the God stuff in the previous films? Because that's perfectly plausible? It doesn't make any sense.
But yeah, he's getting a bit too old for these kinds of roles. Maybe he's going to adopt the role Sean Connery did in the Last Crusade. Junior? JUNIOR!

The previous movies were God, cult and then God, but in all cases the ultimate resolution followed in some fashion from the premise. Whereas in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, it wasn't something that the audience was primed or prepped for and I don't think there's any reason to see it coming.
The fact that it also felt out of place with an Indiana Jones movie just made things worse.
That being said, people flipping out about the refrigerator scene get no sympathy from me. Yes, it was rather silly and over the top, but probably not any less realistic than him riding on that sub for thousands of miles with no provisions. Or that whole mine car sequence.

Here's what a scene from Indy 5 will probably look like.

It's worth seeing, but it's not what I would consider a great movie. It sits roughly between the two trilogies in terms of quality, IMHO. Some might suggest that it's better than Episode VI, but that's probably going to depend on how much you disliked the Ewoks.
Still, trying to cram that much fan service into a movie is going to detract a bit.
