Cry of Fear is pretty good. It's free too.

Rievier: Hmmm... I prefer both, but if I had to choose only one, then I'd definitely go with "worming into your mind" and scare the crap out of you kind of games... a great example is Alien: Isolation, or of course, Penumbra.
If you're into action/movement and crafting/exploration games, I can really recommend Dying Light.
First of all the movement system is simply brilliant, think Mirror's Edge, but with almost total freedom where you can run, jump, climb. Add crafting, shooting and a pretty perfect and very physical melee combat system.
The setting is "zombie apocalypse in a quarantined city" (very loosely based on Camous' The Plague).
Now with time, level-ups and crafting the main character gets more powerful and soon you'll find the zombie hordes not that scary anymore. But when night falls, the game changes totally - no matter how great a hunter you are in daylight, in the dark you ARE prey. The monsters roaming night are really deadly. Unfortunately a few missions can only be completed at night.

Dying Light is one of the very few games that actually manage to scare me and have me panic.

The game has just one big problem: The main story is pretty much crap. It starts off rather good, but after about half of the game it falls apart and could even make you angry (think "gullible hero" to the extreme). And some things just don't make sense at all.
The side "quests" on the other hand are for the most part really good, and their stories range from totally hilarious to painfully sad.
I enjoyed in Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, sadly it was removed from GOG 2 months before i joined. Managed to get it on Steam though, it has been bundled twice i believe. There are still people who have it for trading, in case you get interested.

I finished that game, as well as its great expansion last year ( the story was much better than the main base game)

That was a cool game. I remember reading that the game was inspired based on true events that happened in the 80's on Antarctica. I still don't know why they removed the game ( well, I'm guessing because of licensing issues, just like always).

drealmer7: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
I own this game, so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow, after I'm done with Stasis.

Joking aside, it does look like a short fun experience, so who knows, maybe this month is gone, I'll try it.

Matewis: Cold Fear on steam is very good. It's kind of like Dead Space except not in space but in dark stormy seas.
Somehow I missed that game, so thanks for that.

Thanks, guys, all of your recommendations are very much appreciated, so please, by all means, keep them coming!

You can still find the tech demo for it. I don't know how much of the game it shows you.
IMO the best horror game ever made is Nocturne. Although I don't like how the historical narrative is starting to lump it in together with other games that use its engine, because those games are nowhere near as good.

I also concur with the recommendations for Painkiller: Black Edition which is also an excellent game (actually it is two excellent games combined into one package).
Maybe you like Blackbay Asylum, it's a Lovecraft inspired game, though personally I didn't find it al that scrary but I did found it quite entertaining for such an unknown game.

Similar games are The Suffering and its sequel, but I haven't played any of them (yet).

I also want to recommend Unreal, it might not be scary all of the time, it does bring a lot of atmosphere to the table.

This sounds interesting, so thanks for the recommendation...as for The Suffering, I'd recommend you play at least the first game, and then decide if you want to play the sequel (not as good as the first one, but still better than a lot of modern horror games you see nowadays).
I look less for horror and more things that showcase Halloween culture. I'll be playing Costume Quest 2 and All Zombies Must Die (again).

I can't really get into OW's Halloween update because OW is chock full of retards and I'm taking a bit of break from the bs that goes along with it.

playing Dead Space right now largely cause of the news about Visceral.

will also play Ghost Master again.

if anyone has any tips for games that aren't just in the genre (or aren't even in the horror genre at all) but do showcase Halloween culture, post it here. or even movies. also might watch paranorman, frankenweenie, and hocus pocus again.

There's no Halloween without The Nightmare Before Christmas movie. Then there's Trick'r Treat, a fun anthology horror, then The Addams Family, and of course how could I forget Beetlejuice. As for games...hmm... Oxenfree, Inside, Castlevania, and maybe Nancy Drew and the Ghost of Thornton Hall. There are a lot of other great movies and games, but I'll stop here.

Oh, by the way, thanks for reminding me to play Costume Quest.
