I'm sad to see you go mrkgnao, but I completely understand. Thank you for always being so nice and helpful. We'll miss you, and I hope you have a great time! <3
Farewell. Best of luck on all your adventures.
I hadn't see this thread either.

We don't know each other IRL, but I've always enjoyed interacting, chatting, and joking with you. Your friendliness and the respect for others was always a bright spot within the community.

Speaking for myself personally, I will miss your presence here. Even with everything else, hopefully you'll stop in every now and then and say hello. :)

Take care, and best wishes in whatever comes next.

Star_Ocean: Beyond having a German storefront, could changing EU commerce rules and regulations also be to blame for GOG having to restrict sales of games?
Don't think so. The EU rules are much more lax on censorship than the German rules. So any equalization from the EU would make it easier to sell games in Germany, not more difficult. So yes, the German storefront is the problem here. With that GOG can be said to be advertising the games they sell in Germany - which is forbidden for age restricted games. So they have to lock them in Germany that they are not displayed (and therefore not advertised) to German customers.

mrkgnao: … to say goodbye.
I don't visit in a while and of all days...

This is a forum, yes, but behind every word a real person stands. And it doesn't get any more real than you. Always nice, always kind, witty, respectful, down-to-earth and willing to share your lady with everyone.

Wherever life may take you, may it be for the best.

There is only one thing left to do.

* fanfare * For all your outstanding efforts at finger-pointing, henceforth you shall be known and remembered as mrkgnominao!

Farewell my friend, may the better times find you!

MarkoH01: There is a reason why GOG is becoming more and more like steam but I think that in the end this is not the right way to attract and keep customers.
avatar
zeogold: Probably not, no, but what are we going to do about it?
It's as the saying goes:
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
And again, something, anything. It probably won't work, but doing nothing definitely won't work. Don't do nothing just because you can't do enough.
As for that last line AND the route GOG took, there was a part in what I'm reading now... Hm, wanted to give the quote, it's well written, but quite some time from being published and rather not put stuff out there that the author didn't yet, but anyway, point is, when pushed where you know is wrong and don't want to go, you need to push back, the odds don't matter. And when you're so thoroughly overpowered there's no way to fight anymore, you have a choice: You can bend, break or die. Break if the whole can't make it but some relevant part still might (which actually is far more suitable for a company than a person, taken this way), die if you must, but don't bend. That deserves neither respect nor even pity.

Was actually recently posting something along those lines, basically an outburst as a result of a conversation with someone.

But it's already the 22nd by GMT so... One last time I guess, hope whatever you'll direct your efforts towards from now on will result in far less disappointment and far more fulfillment than your time on GOG ended up being, mrkgnao. May life treat you well.

JunglePredator: I'm fine opening a ticket to support & the like but you say DDoS & if it's actually designed to cause problems it enters the realm of illegal. (At least in Canada & I believe the states as well...)
I was exaggerating when I said DDoS. It's more the equivalent of writing a letter of complaint every day, then getting the guy next to you to do the same.
The idea is to disrupt or at least annoy support because the support has to check each and every email in order to see if it's something the can fix, only to open it and see it's another complaint about the forum.

Cyraxpt: This is possible if people are willing to give it a try
Yeah, I acknowledge this and I agree, but your difficulty lies in actually convincing people to do it. I feel like the majority of people would rather just give up and go somewhere else since it's the easiest option.

Perhaps we simply come from different viewpoints, here. You sound more like an anarchist, whereas I believe more in "if it doesn't work, find something that does". However, that's going a bit too far off topic.
I guess I just see it as too trivial a matter to get overly-upset about.

Not an anarchist at all (and those things listed in the 2nd paragraph of that post are there as serious suggestions from where I'm standing, with the exception of robbing a bank and going on an improperly targeted killing spree, which admittedly were just anger flaring), but definitely not one to lie down accept things as they are if they're not right. Very much seeking to be settled into a comfortable routine with good clear rules, but emphasis on comfortable and good. But yeah, this is off topic.
More on topic, less trivial matters are even harder to do something about. I mean, seems we can do far more here than about eradicating world hunger or curing cancer or saving all endangered species or cleaning the oceans or eliminating poverty, you know? We should obviously do what little we can about those as well, but just saying that the "little" goes a far longer way here than there, so if you argue that it doesn't work even here then...
Wow, this is a real bummer to discover. :/ Sad to hear you fell that way mrkgnao as you've been one of the more pleasant, helpful and generous members of the community as I'm sure many people have attested to amongst the thread. You posted this days ago but I just noticed it moments ago. Hopefully after a vacation of sorts from the forums et al you'll get homesick and come back even if only periodically as it's nice to have you here.

Either way though I'd like to personally thank you for your kindness and generosity over time, and your epic contributions to the community as well. In particular your efforts with MaGog which has been incredibly helpful to everyone. It's been the most sane way for me to determine what games have updated and are in need of downloading again and I thank you for the time you've put into that. It's been a big help.

Hope you enjoy whatever comes next in line for you!
How did I managed to miss this thread ?

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors !  You've been a continuous support for this community since day one.  Thank you for your kindness, your hard work and your help.  It's been a pleasure to read you on the forums !
..and he's gone.
So sad : (
RIP mrkgnao avatar.
Very sorry to see you go - the forums will be a poorer place without you.

mrkgnao: I suggest you begin by looking at MaGog's database in text format (http://www.an-ovel.com/downloads/magog.txt).
avatar
phaolo: Cool, it's possible to import it into Excel.
I don't know what checks Magog does, but maybe with functions some differences could be spotted.
It's a line-based format. You should be able to easily narrow it down to just the changed lines before you even import.

Just sort them, diff them, and massage the diff output back into something the CSV importer will accept when the pipe character is chosen as a separator.

To demonstrate the simplicity, here's a Python script that should work, though I don't have proper magog dumps downloaded to test with yet.

Ah but my comment was just about a basic manual method that didn''t require much coding.
I wouldn't even need to bother narrowing the input, but thanks.
Anyway, I stopped creating the sheet immediately, because surely some gogger will be able to create a way better solution with scripts lol.

I was originally thinking the same way, but then noticed you said Excel, which clearly means "not Linux".

As a very geeky person, I don't consider it coding to pop open my Quake-style terminal by hitting F12 and then hand-write the following lines off the cuff:

mv magog.sorted.txt magog.sorted.old.txt
wget http://www.an-ovel.com/downloads/magog.txt -O- | sort > magog.sorted.txt
diff -u magog.sorted.old.txt magog.txt | sed 's/^\([-+]\)/\1|/' > magog_differences.txt

NOTE: Not tested. May contain typos.

Unixy OSes were designed to make it easy for administrators to do one-off ad-hoc processing of line-oriented text files like security logs.

In fact, if you just want a list of titles out of that, this command'll do it:

cut -d\| -f3 magog_differences.txt
