SirPrimalform: I thought it sounded like Knightmare! Although it wasn't VR in any sense, the player was wearing a helmet simply to prevent them seeing the fact they were in a mostly empty green screen set.
Yeah, after watching a couple of videos I realized it was a simple chroma key, but at that time and to my impressionable young eyes that looked like virtual reality to me. :P

Caesar.: I remember the TV show! But not the part about controlling the game from home. I'd swear the contestants were in the TV studio.

muntdefems: If you're talking about the Spanish version of the show (presented by Beatriz Rico), the contestants were definitely playing from their homes by phone.

Maybe you're thinking about another game show in which the teenage contestants had to enter a castle and defeat an evil wizard or something like that via a very primitive VR interface? I cannot remember its name...

EDIT: WTF?!? The original Spanish Hugo show was presented by Carmen Sevilla? Now that I didn't remember! :O

EDIT#2: "El rescate del talisman"! That's the other game show I was thinking about! Apparently it was sponsored by SEGA and adapted in Britain as "Knightmare".
I used to watch the "VR" one too! I haven't thought about it for years.

I might be mixing them up. The playing via phone was exotic enough to think I would remember that, but it's been so long. I definitely don't remember who the host was. If it was Carmen Sevilla, then that's awesome. LOL

Most importantly, I had the Hugo game in my first PC! I'd recognize the level where you run up the mountain anytime.
I seem to remember both variations, but that's 20+ years ago, so my memory isn't all that clear.

I have/had the Macintosh version of one of the games on floppies. (I hope I have it, at least).

Only in the 90s... :D

I recall the videogame was pretty good too, as far as such things go.

The Choose Your Own Adventure books are supposedly good too, but I've only seen one called The Labyrinths of Fear. In the 90s practically everything had Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks, including Sonic & Mario.

Mr.Mumbles: Yup. I remember watching that on German TV. There was another show where people were navigating a 3D Maze via phone. I can't recall the name just now.
oooh I'd love to know what game that is

Interesting, I wonder if the Spanish version was different?

It's been very long so I might be misremembering. But someone else has mentioned that apparently both versions existed at some point.

Interesting. I've had some users tell me that in their countries, kids had to shout the direction on the phone instead of pressing buttons on their telephones, so there definitely exist variations.
