digaxox: so for example a game from 5 years ago is shown as 50$ discounted to 10$. except for a few exceptions, it is hard to believe that the game is actually worth 50$. i checked online and some local store and the game is worth 20-40$.
PixelBoy: Digital games aren't an investment.
Whatever price you are willing to pay for a game, is its real value. To you.
Then it's a question of whether it is always/sometimes/ever possible to get it for that price.
That's where discounts come into the picture.
You have a chance to buy games which would normally be out of the scope that you are willing or able to pay for.
Trying to figure out some objective value for an immaterial, non-tradeable item is kind of useless, or even impossible.
Some even count some extra value for DRM-free, some others do not.
digaxox: is there a way to actually tell the real value of the game or how realistic the discount is?
PixelBoy: Not really.
Although there are some exceptions.
I know one game (not available on GOG) that seems to be always on sale with 70% off price tag.
Maybe there's one or two days between different promotions, but if you check the game on a random day, most likely it is 70% off.
In that case the real value, whatever that means, is probably the discounted price, and the "discount" is just a psychological trick to create an extra incentive to buy it.
As far as I'm aware of, there are no such cases on GOG, so the only realistic value, or meaningful discount, is the one that you choose.
yes but if you check the trends of some games you will find that it becomes on sale every month or so. is it really adequate for this to recur on a monthly basis? wouldn't make sense to just price it at the discounted price rather than give the impression that there is a discount to grab. it is great that we have a database for GOG and steam to check the price trends. but for someone that just got to know about it, i feel like the sites are just blindsiding us.
it feels like the full price is just being overpriced, so that you might feel that the discounted price is a real deal you should not miss.
Orkhepaj: digital stuff loses value over time
imho ignore what discount they label them , they are pointless
check the final price and decide if it is worth for you to buy it or not
if you have many games not played out ,just dont buy new games ,
why spend money just to see your arbitrary collection to have another title? you cant even resell these
i totally agree. it could be 70USD and worth my money. I recall buying GTA5 when it was first released.
regarding the need to buy more, it's always tempting to see a deal and feel like i should grab it now and play it later.
