So I have a new computer upstairs in my office and want to stream games downstairs on a large tv. I was told I could do thai using a steam link ? Do I just connect the link to the tv? Also how do I use a controller then on the large tv with games from gog or steam
i dont think steam link works with non-steam games. there is a way to set up a wireless display to your computer but imagine the latency is horrid and also i doubt a controller and/or m+k would reach that far.
Then what’s the whole purpose of the steam link? I thought it transmits wirelessly to a tv throughout house

the purpose of steam link is to play steam games.
GOG games work fine with the Steamlink, just add them as non-steam games to your library and most will work without problems (probably need to adjust the controller settings though, in Big Picture Mode). I played a good chunk of Witcher 3 over it.

It also recognises most controllers (as well as keyboard and mice), I use a non-Microsoft 360 controller and a original XB 1 Controller over Bluetooth with it and both work fine.

Main problem: Its sold out ;)

If its a newer TV it might be a good idea to check the available apps for it, I know that at least for Samsung TVs there is a software based version which supposedly works ok as well. Dunno about the TV-controller connection though, bluetooth might work?

For Steam Link, do you plug the controller's into the TV or the PC?

for sure it hooks in the steam link device

If you're using a hardware steam link then you plug them in there, it has USB ports. If you use a software version then you connect them to the TV.

Of course direct connection would work too, but if the computer is close enough for that then it would be far easier and better to just use a HDMI cable instead ;)

servobeupstry: So if it's running as a Samsung Smart TV app, you plug into the TV USB ports? For both wired and wireless controllers?

if you have a laptop you can hook it to your television and stream games from your other computer.
Option 1: long video cable.

Option 2: Nvidia shield or whatever it is, doing streaming on the network.

Option 3: OBS combined with the TV or device that can accept the stream and access it there.

Option 4: move the computer?

Option 5: Develop telepathy

Option 6: Imagine what it would look like..

Option 7: Dream bigger

Option 8: go to sleep, take a walk, read a book, etc....
I guess the more generalized version of Steam link is called "streaming media player". I would suggest looking for such a device, but I have not further experience there.
You can stream your games using a Raspberry PI 2 or 3, there are a few tutorials around the WEB.
