moho_00: Okay, it should be fixed now, sorry about that! It worked fine for me in my dev environment, but let me know if you have any other problems with it.
It works now! There was one game it couldn't add because it doesn't exist in your database: Chaos Theory.

avatar
moho_00: Also, if you utilize the playthroughs feature, which lets you enter time as you play through a game and ultimately enter a completion, you can enter a note specific to the playthrough that's separate from everything else. So you end up with having 3 different places for notes: 1) a game within your collection; 2) a playthrough; 3) a completion.
I found the note. Very impressive to utilize multiple notes, I'll look into that.

Another question. Is there a filter based on genre? I see tags, platforms, playing now/not, completion etc.. but not by genre.

Sorry elgils if I sort of turned away your thread than your original purpose.

I forgot to ask but is it possible to add multiple places where you earn a game?

moho_00: I use (and built!) http://www.completionator.com/. I think it might be close to what you're looking for. Its main goals are to provide a way to efficiently manage your collection (for the collectors out there) and to manage your backlog (for the gamers out there). And if you're like me, you're both of those!
Good job, looks good and very complete! I'll check it tomorrow but I can already say that it's way ahead backlogging and howlongyoucanbeat for my needs.
The Excel export is almost perfect and lack just the category (adventure, rpg, etc). I guess you can put several tags on each game making it difficult to export in a clean spreadsheet.
Be able to import the games from Steam is a huge +, if you can make the same for Gog I'm pretty sure you will be very appreciated here!

Maybe I would have just two suggestion on the list itself. The display of the pictures on a shelf (like Gog) is really nice for a collection and could be great for your project. In the same time the list doesn't display very nicely on my 24' monitor (1920*1200). Usually the websites use only half of the screen and center their content in the middle, this way everything stay readable. Your list use all of the screen so the center is pretty empty. With Firefox reduced to half of the screen it's way better (in my opinion of course) and it even displays one game more!
But maybe it's just me and my configuration.

In any case you deserve a big "bravo" for your work!

Just curious, out of those 4100 games are from Steam? I've been sitting her and manually adding non-Steam games and while the site is quick, it takes a lot of time and then I'll have to change all the settings on the Steam games anyway. :P

Edit: It works to add multiple vendor sources but it takes up extra space, I rather have an in-built system so if that's possible that's a feature request (I'll send one on the site, I assume you have a way of keeping track of them there).

Awesome, glad to hear it might work for you! I used both backloggery and howlongtobeat for a while (along with other sites) and felt none of them quite met all of my criteria, which is why I started the project. Regarding the missing categories, I do plan to add what I call "global tags" at some point. Basically, as the community enters tags for games, you would be able to optionally include them with your own "personal tags". I've also considered accessing an API such as giantbomb or something to try and import some of that data.

The Excel export option was one of the first things I added since I was frustrated that other sites generally don't support it :P That being said, I haven't really modified it much since I first built it, so if you use it a bit, let me know if you need any columns added or anything. The tags are not currently included.

I use 1920x1080 resolution and I agree that there is an abundance of whitespace, especially for smaller-titled games. It's a little better if you're logged in because you get some buttons on the left and right, but still noticeable. There are plenty of columns I could add, so maybe I should just pick one and fill in some space :) I do agree though, the shelf view would be cool and has been requested before. It's something I'd like to do, but there's a looooot of functionality that would need to be ported over, so I've been trying to let everything settle on the list view before looking into that too much.

There isn't a filter for genre, other than the tags, if you want to enter them (though they don't have to be genres, of course). Like I mentioned above, I'd like to add a global tag feature at some point so you won't have to enter a lot of the common ones.

And yep, you can add as many copies of a game as you want! I have plenty of games on both GOG and Steam and they're each treated as separate entries in your collection for full control over them.

Haha out of those 4100 games, 1367 are on Steam. I try to do things in batches, so I'll manage all of my Dreamcast games, then all of my PC games on GOG, then NES, etc. It's easier and far less intimidating for me to do it that way :P But at this point, I have everything entered.
There's no managing my backlog, only hope to contain it.

I'm gonna spend some time to see how it really works but their website links to other interesting alternatives... I'm gonna waste more time on this than actually playing but finally these applications can help to manage other collection (movies, books, wines...)
Many thanks for this!
2. I love tidy desktop and your solution looks sexy! I would eventually try one day if I am brave enough. For the moment I ignore totally the metro screen, 8.1 allow me to do that (start and turn off on the good old desktop) so i don't even really know how it works.
At least congratulation for your hard work, for me it's totally worth it and impressive!
FOSS, yes. Last updated 3 years ago, not keeping up with OS compatibility, and using outdated versions of libraries, also yes.

Hacking together Python scripts to handle basic folder management and data import is moving up the todo list.

So I have tested Completionator, Darkadia and Gc Star.
GC Star is like Gilozard said, a little bit outdated and the windows version won't be updated. However it does work and is the most malleable. But the way to import data from other web database is way too heavy sometimes (took me ages to update Civilization 5, maybe it's a bug but like we said earlier, it won't be fixed anyway). It's still a good solution for those who want to keep their collection offline.

Darkadia looks nice, it's really easy and quick to add a game. Their games database is huge and full of information (coming form Giant Bomb). They keep some features for a "pro" version like having multiple copies of one game or avoid ads but I haven't seen any ads so far. It's hard to say if the website is very active because I don't think they have a forum and the last blog article from the developper was written in August 2014.

Completionator has some nice additional features like Stats, a living community (with an active forum) and of course the import from Steam!
In my opinion if you can add the import from Gog, the display on a bookshelf (I understand it's not your priority ^^), some column in your Excel export (for me just add the tags will be enough) and add some automatic data (like those coming from giantbomb as you mentioned it earlier) it will be a must have!
For the last point, it could even fill the emptyness in the list with a small automatic summary of the game right in the middle.
It could also fix the only problem I got with Completionator : many of my games don't exist in your database and I am not allowed to create them :
Some examples : I got some old and weird games like The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble and some old strategy games I used to love like Final Liberation, Rites of War, Fantasy General ,the best 4x ever made Emperor of the Fading Suns , etc.
I can post that in your forum if you want but if there was a way to incorporate an already made database it would save you so much time. By the way your project of global tag feature is great and again some database already have this global tag.
Finally it's two way of thinking : take something existant and make it better or do it totally your way with more pain but maybe more accurate result.
I'm a lazzy guy so I keep trying making things the simplest I can.

I apologize sincerely for my English, I should'nt write that much, it becomes quickly unreadable and grammatically original...

Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to follow-up to you (and others) to say I just rolled out a new feature....the GOG import!! I went with a more manual approach, very similar to the MaGog Search Engine. Thanks, JMich, for pointing me towards that site!

It took a loooong time for me to map all of the GOG games into the Completionator database (the import has been done for nearly 24 hours now, but I had to get the data ready for it), but it's ready to go. I just imported my own library, so it's already set out for the maiden voyage ;)

Out of the other feedback items you had, I'd say the GiantBomb data import is probably my top priority. I'm going to try and play around with the API in the next few weeks and see what's possible, what's available, and how easy it's going to be to import it. I don't anticipate adding this functionality for a few weeks or even months, but rest assured, it is on my radar!

For the Excel export, I can very easily add the tags in a single column, but if you're wanting to see each tag broken out into its own column, that would require a bit more work. I'll put something on my list though and I can probably add that in the next release or two. Speaking of releases, I generally only do them on Friday or Saturday, though I will not have one next week since I'm taking a vacation to enjoy some awesome college basketball tournament action :D

And finally, if you have any games you need added, feel free to drop them on the Completionator forums and I can add them for you. I've considered having a more automated way to get games loaded, but I'm not quite ready to relinquish control hehe.

Anyways, if you or anyone else happens to try out the GOG import, let me know what you think! I've mapped almost all of the games GOG currently has for sale, but there are a few stragglers out there. It does NOT support DLC yet since Completionator has no place for it right now (but it will...)

Hi,
I just tried your site and it looks quite promising I will maybe choose it over backloggery I am using right now.

I tired importing both Steam and GOG and there are some games that were missing form it. Some of them were listed by your import feature and some were not even mentioned there and were just missed.
I can provide you with list if you want.

What I want to certainly mention from GOG is that from the Lord of the Realms pack only adds LotR 2 but not the LotR 1 (nor the Lords of the Realm II Siege Pack expansion but that's not that important).
Also Might and Magic 6-pack is added as 1 entry while others like Geneforge or Avernum were added separately.

There are also things like Divinity Original Sin, Sword of the Star or Age of Wonders 3 but those I am fairly sure they were not added beacuse naming on GOG part. I have Divinity on Steam as well and it was added there but here it is called Divinity: Original Sin + 1 DLC so it was excluded. The same was with the other two, as they are too named "the game name" + DLC.

I can provide the rest that was missed by import as well if you wish.

As for the site itself I am liking what I have seen so far but is there any option to change games per pages to something even higher than 50 (or perhaps lower if someone wants that)?
Also is it possible or do you plan to make it that you can tie the entires together to join series or link DLC to main game?

Wow that was quick and huge, almost perfect import for myself except one (Pillars of Eternity but it's not even published yet) with an almost perfect import from Steam making this part of my collection added in few minutes!
Just one remark : please write on your import tutorial that it does work only with the english version of Gog. It seems obvious but I didn't think about it and tried few times with my french version and that has never worked of course. I guess the German will have the same issue. At least it's very easy to change the language in Gog so it's not really a problem if you know it ;)

For GiantBomb (or MobyGames and other database) I can't wait to see what you are going to do with it! When I look at my collection I see some game I can't even say what they are about... so few lines of text would'nt be too much!

For the Excel export, don't worry and make it easy. You should ask your actual community but I think one column for tag is good enough. We can still separate them manually in the Excel, it's not a big deal.

So thanks for your job, have a nice vacation and a good show!

Hey, sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this! I've been lazy on vacation this week :P Anyways, I think I mapped all of the games you had missing, but since GOG is changing the way compilation games are broken out on the Account page, you might see some more the next time you run it. The import is set up so it won't add a duplicate game, regardless of how it's mapped, but let me know if you see anything weird.

For the Lords of the Realm issue, did you happen to uncheck the "break out compilation games" option on the Collection Search page? The actual game entry is Lords of the Realm II: Royal Edition, which contains Lords of the Realm 1 and 2, plus the Siege Pack expansion. This would also explain why Might and Magic VI is behaving that way. I think I see the issue, it looks like new users are going in with the default compilation option (under the green Settings button) as FALSE, so they aren't broken out. I'm pretty sure that's what happened, so I'll fix that moving forward. But anyways, to see those games, just check the "break out compilation games" option on the Collection Search page :)

For the other games like Divinity: Original Sin, the issue there was they had the "+ DLC" at the end, like you mentioned. I didn't have any of these games in my library, so I didn't realize GOG did that. For now, I've just added the various "+ DLC" mappings that I've seen (including yours), but I'll try to come up with something a little more elegant than that in the future haha.

For changing the # of games per page, that's definitely something I'd like to provide. I recently added the dropdowns to control sorting options and had planned on adding another paging dropdown right next to those. I'll add it to my list and hopefully can knock it out in the next couple of weeks (I'm taking this one off due to basketball, woohoo!) since it should be pretty simple.

And finally, for tying series together, you could use the tagging or list options, but that's all that's available at this time. For DLC, I do plan on tackling that at some point, though I'm not sure how I'm going to get it from the GOG import since the games just use the "+ 1 DLC" suffix. But I expect you'll be able to manually enter them as well.

Thanks for the note on the import only working for the English version of GOG! I didn't even think about that when I built it, but yeah, that would not work. I'll add a note to the import page to indicate this.

I'll go ahead and add the tags to the Excel export as a single column in the next release (should be 3/27). It should be super easy to do, so baby steps!

Oh and I added Pillars of Eternity, so you can import that one now :D
