So I have some relatives visiting from Israel, and they want to get an unlocked HTC Inspire 4G phone for their grandson.

This looks promising: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Inspire-4G-Unlocked-Support/dp/B004WEZI2U except for the couple reviews stating that the phone came not unlocked.

The question is, how would I be able to check that without an actual non-AT&T SIM card to try it with?

Also, does anybody know the difference between "HTC Insupre 4G" and "HTC A9192 Inspire 4G" phones? They have two separate Amazon pages...
Found this on the web "Go to HBOOT menu (Power off. Then hold vol down, and press power.) Check on top what it says. If it says S ENG-OFF it means its unlocked."

If that doesn't work the HTC Inpsire 4G is very easy to unlock.

Thanks!

I saw that post too, but then below that was "I don't think it needs to say S ENG-OFF to be unlocked, just SHIP s-Off. Eng s-Off means the engineering hboot has been flashed, if I'm not mistaken, which is not the state that the basic rooting process leaves you in." which made me think this is only relevant to hacking/rooting the phone to unlock it, instead of using the unlock code.
i think it is nearly impossible to check HTC phone is locked or unlocked without extra sim. one unlock code vendor : www.attunlockcode.com guided me to check via non accepted sim card. i suggest you to arrange extra sim for checking phone is locked or unlocked. Thanks
