I'm new and just read some posts about people trading games. How exactly do trades work? I would definitely be interested in trading my GOG Witcher 3 for a Steam Witcher 3 or something equivalent.
Why, the GOG Witcher is DRM free, and our forum is more fun, if not borderline psychotic. :P

I've been buying from GOG for a few years but I have never traded anything. I would also like to know how it works. All I have (that I am aware of) that I can trade is a STALKER:Clear Sky promo code, but I have a large list of games. Wondering if I can trade those or not.

I'm just super OCD about about stuff and as I have 1 and 2 on steam I'd like to have 3 there as well. I was under the impression that if I bought the physical copy of a game I could just add the CD Key to steam and activate it. Boy was I wrong.

I don't trade in here either but I don't see a problem with it.

In some circumstances you can do that on GOG...it's called "Reclaim Your Game" but I've never done that either.

Careful with scammers as any other site.

How does it work though? How does one actually exchange games that are purchased?
Trading on GOG (though I've only traded once, over a year ago):

You cannot trade any games that are in your account.

If you have not downloaded anything from a game in your account, you can send a request to support to ask them to convert your game to a gift, which would then be tradeable. They may or may not be able to help. If done quickly after the purchase, I think you won't have any problems.

To trade a game, you must have a gift code. When you purchase a game you can choose to purchase it as a gift. You are asked to submit an email address for the person the gift is for - use your email address that is associated with your gog account.

In your account you can select unredeemed gifts to see what you have available for gifting or trading. The redeem codes are found there with your order.

The person with lowest rep sends the game code first via chat message.

NOTE: You can, of course, redeem your gift codes to your own account so some people make most of their purchases as gifts then later add it to their account if they wind up wanting to own rather than gift or trade.

When people are talking about trading, they're referring to games purchased as gift codes, or to codes gotten for free from some promo, like the free copy of Battle Realms available on the front page currently. Often, GOG Support will convert an unplayed game in your library into a gift code if you ask; however, if you've downloaded any of the files associated with a game -- even the bonus goodies, like wallpapers -- they won't be able to help. (This applies to asking for refunds, too.)

I see I've already more or less been ninja'd while I typed this, so I won't bother to provide the link to the general trading thread again. :)

So let's see if I got this straight:
- find game you want
- purchase game
+ make sure you check the gift code box at checkout
+ use your own email address to gift to
- now you have the game and a gift code to trade with?

Also, I cannot trade a game for which I do not have a gift code.

Sounds ok, but is this ok with GOG?

New rule : You are not allowed to trade the Gog gift code that you have received via a giveaway or from a generous person .

He's asking about getting his GOG copy on Steam, not the other way around.

Primatebuddy, other than purchasing a Steam key (or simply adding your GOG copy as a non-Steam game), there is no way to do that.

Just to clarify, if you follow the procedure you outlined you DO NOT have BOTH the game and a gift code. You have JUST a gift code. If you so choose, you can later decide to "redeem" this gift code yourself and you'll be able to download the game. Or you can trade the gift code, and the person you trade it to will be able to redeem it and download the game BUT YOU NO LONGER WILL BE ABLE TO.
