vsr: Make sure you're buying a Flicker-free monitor, if you don't want to have problems with your eyes and headache all the time.

To check if monitor/TV is flickering you can use so called "pencil test" or camera of your phone (there should be no moving lines).

Matte finish is a nice addition too. Your eyes will thank you.
Good advise! A flicker-free monitor, 486 and Soundblaster 16 is all you need!

timppu: IPS, PLS, VA, TN, OLED... what what whaaat? I have no idea what abbreviaton my laptop screen uses besides LED, but I am quite happy with it, playing games and watching videos (even movies) on it.
Well, then I suggest you read up on it immediately, so that you know just how disappointing your viewing experience really is.

Yeah I even went to check the technical specs of ASUS G75VW, but it didn't have any of those aforementioned abbreviations. About its screen the specs only said "LED Backlight" or something like that.

This usually means that it's a TN.

Thanks, now I know that. So I googled for a couple of articles and at least one of them convinced me that TN is a good choice particularly for gaming, so I guess I am happy with this then, especially as I don't need a wide viewing angle for a laptop screen (I am always sitting right in front of it).

But now I have no idea what technology my LED HDTV uses, is it TN as well? I guess...?

I use S-IPS displays and a TN display side by side and there really isn't anything that the TN display does better than the IPS ones. Its true that the IPS black isn't as deep, there is a slight silvery shine but i don't really notice it when i don't think of it and they don't crush darker colours (the TN does, badly). Its a much more pleasant picture overall.

I really don't recommend TN displays for anything except very fast games and everyday use/internet browsing etc. I wouldn't try any kind of colour-sensitive work on it for example (I mostly use it for web surfing/iTunes/palettes and so on). It was third of the price though, so unless accurate colours are important its still worth considering for "normal" users i think.

Its hard to do decent comparisons (unless you order two and send the least favourite back), but don't trust the colours in stores, they often are in over-saturared, over-bright demo modes, or worse, have some kind of dynamic contrast setting on, its almost useless to compare screens there.

I fully agree with ignisferroque,,, I would only recommend TN displays for a person that strictly plays FPS games

Emlaraal: How does IPS monitor fare in dark and gritty games? I am having my doubts about ips monitors since supposedly they fail to deliver good black color. I am thinking more about cheap VA , BENQ GW2270H monitor but i heard people have problem with ghosting which in my opinions is worse then screen bleed or ips glow.
I was thinking about dark games like batman, thief (modern one), amnesia, skyrim, dead space, metro, dark souls etc.
I am clearly a noob about this since i just bought gaming pc without taking any considiration about monitor.
