I have a folder in AppData/Local called GOG.com, with subfolders called Galaxy/Applications/a bunch of numbers/RemoteConfigCache/and then a JSON file called remote_config_cache_production_worldwide.json

I've signed into the GOG website, but other than that, I've never downloaded Galaxy at all. How did the folder get here?

Did you happen to have installed a game bought on GOG? As standalone installers from GOG.com for the past few years have defaulted (IIRC) to installing GOG Galaxy unless it's unchecked during the installer steps (ie: it may have been unwittingly installed).

Haven't bought a game on GOG yet. I have the first Witcher, which is downloaded on Steam, and I haven't played since April. The folder was made in August.

Hmm. Only other thing I can think of would be if another user/household member had access to the system during that period and installed it. Can't think of anything else.

Does GOG Galaxy show in your list of installed programs either in the control panel or just looking at Program Files/Program Files (x86)?

Nope, I'm the only person who uses this PC and have never downloaded Galaxy before. Nothing there that has anything GOG related, just in AppData.

Are there several folders with random numbers of just one?
I haven't read of Galaxy installing via games bought from Steam but maybe someone else can comment. The fact that it doesn't appear as a currently installed program is curious though.

Just to "confirm" that on this Windows 10 PC where I am writing now, to which I have installed many GOG games with the standalone installers but never installed Galaxy, and obviously visited the GOG site lots of times with the Chrome browser, I searched for "gog" or "galaxy" under AppData and didn't find anything related to Galaxy installation.

So merely visiting the site with your web browser or using the offline installers shouldn't by default add such Galaxy stuff there, I presume. Then again I can't be sure for all offline installers, naturally. Currently I have these GOG games installed (through the offline installers):

Battlefleet Gothic Armada
Defcon
Disciples 2
Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves
Dungeon Keeper Gold
Dungeon Siege
Dungeon Siege 2
Icewind Dale 2
Imperialism
Mafia
Might and Magic IX
Mortal Kombat
Star Wars - Dark Forces
Star Wars Jedi Knight - Dark Forces 2
Star Wars Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith
StarTopia
Two Worlds Epic Edition
Wizardry 8

You haven't tried e.g. the Steam version of GWENT? I seem to recall some reports it would install a Galaxy client (and require the Steam user to create a Galaxy/GOG account)?

Nope, I don't play GWENT. I'm as perplexed as you are.

I have one for each game installed. It's starting to look like The Witcher on Steam could have created Galaxy folders. You can rename the root folder and reinstall The Witcher through Steam to see if it creates the entry again.

Well, here's the thing, I installed the Witcher on April, and haven't played it since. The GOG.com folder was created in August

Have you accessed Steam in online mode in August? Could have installed updates...

Could there have been a game update in the meantime? This is mysterious.

Have never gotten a game update for the first Witcher since installing it.
I imagine any game that includes the Galaxy dlls could potentially install stuff there. There are such games on steam and maybe elsewhere too?

For example: https://steamdb.info/depot/417291/

GoaT_Data/Managed/GalaxyCSharp.dll
GoaT_Data/Plugins/Galaxy.dll
GoaT_Data/Plugins/GalaxyCSharpGlue.dll
GoaT_Data/Plugins/GalaxyPeer.dll
GoaT_Data/Plugins/GalaxyPeer64.dll
