Like, isn't that the whole point of that setting? If either one of us has their Chat privacy set to preclude messages, neither of us can contact the other? What's the point otherwise?

Is this a thing? Or is it a bug with Chat?
Or am I being trolled? As in: he sent me a string of messages, then changed his privacy settings to preclude any replies immediately after. I mean, it was a random user, unknown to me, offering me a free game (which I have no interest in, but that's neither here nor there). But it's not like that would be the first time that that's happened, and all of the other such offers I've gotten in the past have been sincere. This also wasn't an offer for a game swap, or some other sort of quid pro quo. It just seems like an unusually subtle way to troll a complete stranger, is what I'm saying. (Also, there was a good couple minutes between his first two posts and his last, which would mean there would've been a window in which I could've easily answered him before he changed his contact settings back to private.)

Thoughts?

Seems like trolling. I just tried changing my profile to "Friends Only" and "Start Conversation" turned grey. So it does appear to be a two-way exclusion where if either party is set to "Friends Only", there is no conversation.

Thus, he must have changed his settings after sending the message.

Edit: It "could be" possible if someone is trying to gift randomly without reciprocation, they could drop some codes and go back to private. I can think of a couple users who might do something like that, but I'm sure you'd recognize them. Thus, far more likely to be trolling.

This turned out to have been the case. It was basically an unintentional troll. :P
