I've never played it before but looking to check it out. I'm someone who tends to get frustrated by older game controls schemes and such, though. Is the general consensus that they are okay? Thanks.
You just point and click for the most part. Press space to pause if you're feeling fancy.

But combat is very lacklustre, and certainly not the main draw of this game. I might encourage you to just lower the difficulty to easy and focus on the role-playing.
Movement-wise, it's quite a bit like an RTS game. Click or click-drag to select your characters, right-click to move or interact, use arrow-keys or shove the mouse to the edges of the screen to scroll around the map. Also press space to pause, as DaCostaBR mentioned, which can be useful when the combat gets stressful (though combat isn't the main point of the game, and with the right skills and choices you can avoid most of it).

As for the UI, I think it's quite clear and natural, but then again, I adore the game and its Infinity Engine siblings, so I might not have the most unbiased opinion.

Outside the clicking for movement and attack others mentioned, you will only be looking at a typical separate inventory screen, and once in a while a character stats screen. There is no menu hell to execute simple commands, and everything has keyboard shortcuts too. Personally I had zero problems with this game in a recent playthrough, and I can't say the same for many modern games, e.g. Darksiders 2.
