Just bought and downloaded the complete HoMM3 game last night and was wondering why the cheat codes I found online (and have used on previous versions of the game I've bought and played) do not work this time.

Which ones have you used?
It's "Shadow of Death" so "Armageddon's Blade" and "Restoration of Erathia" cheats will not work, naturally.
The codes you need are all Matrix-themed. Try typing nwcneo for example.

Off topic but since I'm here. I heard HoMM3 is difficult, which game is an easy introduction to the Heroes of Might and Magic style genre for a noob like me, also, a game preferably available on Gog. The only similar game I played was Warlock: Master of the Arcane but that was on steam and I didn't play that much.

Heroes Chronicles.

Way too easy, but if you find HoMM3 too tough, this would be a good introduction.

Ok thanks, I'll try that and then perhaps progress to something like HoMM3 or Disciples 2.

You can also play HoMM3 on easier settings that give you more resources so that you get the hang of the game. Try some scenarios first to see how it goes and when you are ready, you can start the campaign on default settings.
