It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I was catching up some updates but 2 of them just keep failing (currently 17 attempts) it's the very new Update KB4480970 and a older one KB3133977.
While I don't care much about the second one, the first one is needed to run a game I purchased recently (not on GOG but the Steam community is about as helpful as a fish in space) so I'm kind of desperate here.

I already looked through the google serch results but the answeres fall in one of three catagories:
- didn't work (like downloading and installing it manually or deactivating any kind of AV-like program)
- different problem with same error code
- too complex for me to understand (they throw arnound terms and names I never read before)

Here's what happens when I try updating:
First everything seems normal, but after restarting I get the message that there was an error while configuring windows and it's reverting the changes made (roughly translated, my system language is german not english) after that it automatically restarts another 2 times with the same result before it gives up on installing it.

I'm using:
i7 4790k
MSI GTX 980 4G
16 GB RAM
Samsung 850 EVO 1TB as the systems drive
and use Windows 7 Ultimate in dual-boot with Linux Mint
Dirvers are updated and all other avaiable windows updates are installed

If you have an idea how to fix it please give me a step by step explanation, I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to more advanced windows functions (never needed that knowledge until now).

What game is this?
Why do you think you need this update?
Check logs: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log
You downloaded the update package from here URL?
Try this update pack URL

So you're saying that a game needs a Windows 7 update that was released 4 days ago?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4480970/windows-7-update-kb4480970
You should look for your problem elsewhere. Which game are you talking about anyway?
It might need an optional update. Have a look at those.

How do you open the .log files, they refuse access? (only the cbs logfiles, not problem with the others)

Thanks, I'll try the second link as soon as I have time to do so.
I used the first link for manual downlaod and install but with the same result.

As for the issue with the game it's Tales of Vesperia which was releasd today, I don't know why it's needed but there are multiple reports of the problem with launching it is fixed as soon as that update is installed, it's a random (the game launches 1 out of 20 times you start it) and rather rare issue but it definitely seems to be connected to the update somehow or the lack thereof, probably some wierd combination of coincidences and the Update just happens to change something connected to it.

They're all installed aside from the most obscure language pckages.

No, it's definitely the the upadate I mentioned. Others had the problem I have fixed as soon as it was installed.

Since you dual-boot with Mint, you could try playing it on that using SteamPlay - there's only one report for it on ProtonDB atm but it looks like it has a good chance of working well: https://www.protondb.com/app/738540

To enable Steam Play for all titles go to Steam --> Settings --> Steam Play --> tick "Enable Steam Play for all titles" (I'd also strongly recommend setting "Use this tool instead of game-specific selections from Steam" and selecting the Proton 3.16-6 Beta)

Then restart Steam and simply install & play it like you would any native Linux game.

Copy it to desktop, but first do that URL only 2. To Scan and Repair System Files
and URL
then upload somewhere cbs.log and sfcdetails.txt

Also, if you wanna try this update pack, don't forget disable firewall, antivirus.
(if there is any problem, upload this log C:\WINDOWS\UpdatePack7.log)

Otherwise, try doing as adamhm says (Linux Mint and Proton), this should work. :)

I had a similar issue a while ago. Took me a few days to solve but eventually found the answer via google

. The update wouldn't install until some other unrelated update was installed first. I had to trawl through loads of forums etc that were thrown up in the search.

Not much help, I know, but it may be thew answer if you do enough digging

Good luck
If it's not required don't worry about it.

But with Windows 10 you'll be badgered about it regardless of your thoughts.

I've only really had issues trying to install the VS2015 libraries, though i had a workaround for it. At least until SP1 somehow got upgraded/worked through installing/using the UE4 toolset.
Trying to resolve a windows update problem is much like rolling the dice and trying to figure out the probability of landing a 7, when you only have six digits. Good luck.

Currently installing any WIndows updates is rolling the dice... And not installing is often not an option because there are fixes for bad security issues included which are already exploited...

Microsoft are currently really losing their shit... it's really a mess.

When I accidentally erased my install of 10, I didn't bother to try and reinstall it. When my new computer arrived with a preinstalled 7 partition, I didn't bother connecting the drive. I'm done with Windows, and I won't bother looking back.

And sadly not enough to get the real heavy legal cases against them (they had a few minor legal losses) that might make them up their game. Sadly it is not the enterrpise level users with departments of IT fixers to help them that are getting shafted by MS so much as the odd random home user, and they are the most vulnerable in truth.

Yeah MS have really got bad in terms of the quality of their updates over recent years.

I sadly have no help for the op (but do some internet searches for your issue) but feel the pain.

I managaed to install it now, just needed to temporarily deactivate Grub Bootloader.
No idea why that caused problems with the update, but it works now.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway, might come in handy with one of the next upadates or someone else.
