Hi guys, I've been diving back into my interest of the European air war during WWII and I can recall a game that was around probably in the mid-late 1990s that was along the lines of Talonsoft's Battle of Britain in terms of gameplay but included no flight simulator aspect. It was a straight strategy game wherein you controlled the RAF (and possibly the Luftwaffe though I never did), at least during the Battle of Britain and possibly other scenarios too.

I can't remember much else other than the look was subtly different from the screenshots of Battle of Britain. I've also crossed off the list Achtung Spitfire!

Any help getting this worm out of my head would be awesome.

Maybe this one?

12 o'Clock High: Bombing the Reich from 1999.

You already mentioned the two I was thinking of.

I always regret not playing them - LOVE the idea and I had played a PC Gamer of one of them back in the day.

Maybe one of these days one will show up here.
Could it be Over the Reich? It's a bit different to the Talonsoft game though in that it's a tactical turn based combat sim (similar to AH's Air Force and Dauntless board games) where as Battle of Britain is a strategic air war sim. But it has a similar look and was from about 1996 or so.

I would wager it's Over The Reich, which was actually the sequel to Achtung Spitfire. (Or was it the other way 'round?...)

I loved playing that game on my old Performa 6320/120 CD back in the day. I was a massive military aviation buff when I was a kid, and I loved geeking out over the various planes that game had on offer. One of my own favorite scenarios was putting a squadron of Me-262s vs. a squadron of Mk III Gloster Meteors.

I've been wracking my brain over this for years. At first I was absolutely positive that Microprose's EAW had a mode where you could play out the airwar on a strategic level by producing and repairing fighters, keeping airfields stocked and vectoring squadrons to intercept for the RAF. But now that I've reinstalled the game and managed to get it working I can't find the mode anywhere, so am beginning to doubt myself. I also remember (but might be mistaken) that you could jump in any squadron at any time and fly a plane in it yourself, which reaffirms my belief that this is or was a mode in EAW.

If all this was happening while Wagner's "Ride Of The Valkyries" was playing in the background, then yes, it's Over The Reich you're looking for.

You're maybe mixing this up with 1942 The Pacific Air War, which indeed has a strategic mode?

After some more digging around I found it :) I completely forgot I also owned another BoB-themed sim Rowan's Battle of Britain and the sequel Battle of Britain II Wings of VIctory. These let you play as an RAF commander, while also giving you the option to jump into the aircraft you were vectoring.

I only now see that Rowans BoB actually is Talonsoft's BoB which the OP mentioned..
