I stumble about without a clue. It seems that one point I had added Liesure Suit Larry to my library, but I've no idea what this means. Can I run the game from the library? If so, how?

I downloaded a .sh file. Is that the data for the game?

I installed scummvm, but the downloaded files are all grayed out

I have Liesure Suit as well on old Sierra CDs, When I mount the CD and run scummvm on it the files y are grayed out as well. I assume this means that scummvm does not recognize the format the files.

I'm running devuan Chimaera.

A .sh file is a linux bash script, that's the installation file GOG provides for linux. Open a terminal, go to the directory it's located ("cd Downloads" for instance) and type:

./file_name.sh

and it should install the game.

If it doesn't, that's probably because the file is not an executable yet, in such case, type:

chmod +x file_name.sh to make it executable.

As for your old CD, you'd have to install it with wine.

Indeed.

I think we need to back up and ask what OS he's using first. By default we would assume windows, and maybe he downloaded the linux version by accident?

He did mention it, "Devuan Chimaera", which after googling it is an obscure debian-based distro I had never heard of (and I'm a linux user).

its simply debian without systemd as init...
from what im seeing, scummvm is a virtual machine which is used to run certain old games rt?

but i guess GOG would take care of that for you...

so, u could simply try running the shell script as maxleod suggested, which should install the game and then go to the directory where u installed the game....and then run the start.sh script

if u dont see a start.sh script (from the linux games which I've installed, there is always a start.sh script), post a screenshot of the game directory, so that we can figure out something then :)

you have to download the files from the library (.exe/bin for windows, .sh for linux, god knows what for macOS) and then run the file for installing. once its installed, u launch the game from the game directory.

The replies to my question very helpful. I had to install some packages and an old version of a library, but in the end succeeded. I was put off by a the question whether to create a desktop shortcut. Had look up just what a "shortcut" is. Never used one. Not only am I running a version of Linux some find obscure, but I also choose not to install any desktop. The other question was to add the game to the menu. I fun fluxbox window manager which has a menu, but apparently some other menu was meant. I don't use desktop menues. Finally got it going. The DOS version took me back to when thegame first came out. I like it.

Fluxbox is used in Slax so i have some familiarity with it. Overall pretty simple. The simpler it is the faster it should run, and if you don't have 100 programs then the handful of menu items that pop up will be sufficient.

Alright, glad to hear it's working for you.
