paladin181: What's the deal with Hellgate: London? I've never heard of this game before a few months ago and a lot of people seem to really want it..?
It's an old insanely overhyped game (we're talking molyneux-level hype there, like, the next most revolutionary omni-RPG ever) that, after the cut of all its promised features, ended up being a mere scifi diablo-like, but a fun one for those who didn't look for more than this. So people are a bit divided about it, and the game wasn't a huge success. But recently it has resurfaced, with multiplayer reintagration or whatever, so there's been a little surge of fandom and visibility.

Which is a good thing in my eyes. It's a nice little game, and I'm happy when I see enthousiasm for it.

Thanks for the info and a +1 to you.
I never played it, nor was really aware it was over-hyped (you'd think gamers would have learned not to believe the hype, but oh well), but I would like to see the game on GOG.

As has been said, the best bet would be to try and contact the developer directly about their plans to release it on GOG. If it was rejected, they are more likely to let you know.
The game was over-hyped to the max but . . I enjoyed playing the single player game except that you couldn't finish the game in single player. You could only "complete" the game using multiplayer online for a fee IIRC. I may be remembering this incorrectly but not having access to the final levels in single player was my harshest complaint. Backlash for the game was massive which resulted in me not following the drama but I still continued to play the game.

I did like the game and felt it was a shooter/RPG combo. I liked disassembling your loot and upgrading your existing equipment from the resulting parts. I also liked the un-rushed atmosphere as sitting on a catwalk with your trusty sniper rifle was fun as was clearing the rooms/streets/tunnels.

I had Serious Sam, Painkiller Black and Hellgate:London installed on the same system and found myself playing HG:L more often for the quick shooter fix. CPU crash on my XP box stopped my occasional game play but prior to the crash I never consider uninstalling it as it was just plain fun to play even with it's faults.

I still have my original install disks but if GOG released the original HG:L single player with all game levels available in single player . . I would buy it again. It could never compare to today's shooters but like most games . . some folks would enjoy it . . other would not.

Edit: Another thing I liked about the game was playing with sword/axe was just as enjoyable as using guns etc.. I had dozens of characters using different builds.

Don't know that hype everyone keeps talking about ;)
Do know that at a point i just stop folowing the story,
and just traveled from station to station,
and up on the streets of London.
This is my "travel down memory lane" game;
may have its limitations and defects, can't see them.
just sure that people share that feeling,
and all i ask for is a way to get it back.

MadalinStroe: Except that apparently every town character model got their hair changed to the typical weaboo style...
Really? didn't know about that hair change, may try to search screenshots of it.
I was active on a game forum right around the time this game out (or maybe just after) but I was going through a "console" phase so I never really followed it or knew much about it beyond the fact that a few people there were interested in the game.

Looked up a few screenshots and such a couple weeks back when there was some buzz about a rerelease. I'd love it if it showed up here. Game looks gorgeous still and the setting is unique enough.

Plus I've always had a weakness for "teh lootz" ;) Borderlands like precursor in a freaky demon-scifi London sounds like a winner to me.
Little known fact, this was Edward R Morrow's original sign on, but they made him change it.

Said it wasn't "sexy enough".
Less than 10 on Steam? I might have to get it. I love the idea of playng MMOs as a not... MMO.

Wish the same could be said for WoW, Acheron, or Everquest.

Same difference! Once I get a secure connection I am on it.
By the way. Here's a very nice historical presentation of the game :

Courtesy of... well, courtesy of those who had answered to this thread.
I bought it already but would rebuy if it comes to GOG.
It's as good as most isometric hack'n'slash games out there but offers a little change with its scenario from all the fantasy and/or sf only stories.
Being repetitive and over-hyped? Gimme a break. Not more then most games these days.
It's definitely a classic which should be added to this site. Those CD's in the shelf don't live forever.
This game really is a classic though. It's just that Roper mismanaged the company along with a few other senior execs.

I was in a clan at the time the game was live that was pretty active on the official forums and ingame. Word on the street was the company (Flagship) was hemorrhaging money and the execs just couldn't figure out how to not bleed dollars.

It didn't help that many people would sign up for the monthly sub (It was only $10/month) and I read many reports of people never even getting charged, while getting sub benefits.

I paid for the lifetime sub and got 2 (maybe 3?) major content updates. Patch 2.0 never saw live. I'm still pissed at Roper over that one. I've been told he's not the only one responsible, but at the time he certainly liked to take a lot of credit for stuff.

I'm also unsure if it was Brevik's or Roper's idea to nerf boss loot drops around 6 months into the game going live, but whoever did that did not help the game's sales or sub numbers.

This version seems to be updated in some ways from the core game that was live in the US prior to Hanbit taking over. I see a lot of online components in it that have been disabled, and that weren't in the original game. I was told by a friend it's a version of Hellgate: Global for anyone who's followed the game at all.

It definitely seems easier so far, but I haven't spent a ton of time in it because it's like having sex with an old girlfriend only now she's lifeless and doesn't move at all while you're doing it. It's still a good game, but my memories and there being no online component to it, are affecting my joy with it.

I am still going to play through it, but I played it at a time when life was pretty rough for me, not that any of you want a personal history, but I have to retrain my synapses to recognize the quality of the game, and not the mental associations of what was going on around me at the time.

tl;dr good game that I wish had online components still, with a bit of history thrown into the discussion
