Hi all-

Looks like the HOI series is on sale. I've considered giving one of these a try, but I'm not sure where to start.

Any Paradox veterans have a recommendation on 1, 2, or 3 (and how important those 3 DLCs are)?

I know if somebody asked where to start on Master of Orion, I'd say 2. Civ? I'd recommend 2 or 3 - but there's room for debate there. Heroes of Might and Magic? Clearly 3, and nothing else comes close.

So for those that have played and loved them all... where should I start? [EDIT] Oh, and where does "Darkest Hour" fit into this picture?

Thanks!

Darkest Hour started as a mod for HOI2 as I recall, but became an official standalone release. Some people I know have found it a better introduction to the games.

Personally, I found HOI3 (with all DLC) to be the easiest start due to the choices of nations, starting scenarios and automation for various aspects of play (ie economy or national politics).

I cant speak for vanilla HOI2 or HOI though.

For the price Id guess Darkest Hour would be the best intro but Im sure somebody will reason otherwise if im wrong.

Edit: as far as HOI3 goes, the general opinion (as I have read it) is that the DLC is pretty important to full enjoyment of the game - eother due to modding requirements, or options of play.

I would say Darkest Hour is HOI 2 on steroids. New scenarios, decisions and the most important thing they FIXED MOD SUPPORT.
Oh and you got vanilla hoi2 for free.

The DLC in HOI 3 are important because their changes are more than cosmetical, but I do not know the list of changes.

I think you should choose between darkest hour and hoi3, but I think the most new user friendly is fourth part which sadly is not on GOG.

Darkest Hour with some mods.
Darkest Hour, unless the graphics put you off (though it's not like HoI3 is a looker either). Why DH? It's more beginner-friendly, has lots of awesome mods and better value overall. HoI2 I think is 100% skippable, in fact I think it's included with DH. HoI3 looks a little nicer but it's extremely heavy on micromanagement. If you're playing as a medium or powerful country, you're going to have to either delegate control of some units to the AI or experience the slowest, most fiddly game ever. It also has a more narrow timeframe - DH is 30 years, HoI3 is 12.
Darkest Hour it is, thank you everybody!
