Yeah, I erased my wish list completely today. Whether or not I ever buy anything here again depends on if GOG ever gives me my money back on Cyberpunk 2077. Until then, I've got my alternatives lined up and GOG isn't the only DRM free distributor out there; Bot Vice (and the rest of Dynagames) is available and DRM free on itchio, as is Celeste, Bleed 2, etc. Rance series on Manga Gamer, and many games on Steam itself. 99% of my game library here on GOG is available on Steam besides a few NEO GEO games and their are other means to back those games up legally (hell they play better too tbh); I actually double dipped on a few faves I had on Steam like Fight'N Rage, Furi, and One Step From Eden even though Steam supports some of these DRM free already.
GOG's DRM hype is just about all it has these days when comparing a major storefront like Steam.
- Steam's library beat's the brakes off GOG as most of my favorite game devs/publishers are there, especially as someone that came from console gaming. The DRM in most games give devs a sense of security even if it gets cracked...In all honesty, if DRM ever stopped a game I paid money for from working I'd remove it for offline based games (understandable for MMOs/online only games to go down, but not single-player).
- Fighting games are one of my favorite genres/huge for me and they've actually got a lot of fighting games to play with others on Steam.
- Denuvo eventually gets removed in most games one way or another
- Also, unlike GOG, I can keep my prices locked with my home country when traveling/living abroad and never worry about games locked out of my home country or absurd prices. I'm an expat and I really appreciate this feature. GOG used to have a feature that mitigated this with regional pricing, but scrapped it.
- A great overlay that provides a console like experience + input support for way more controller types
- cards that double as free wallpapers and stuff you can sell on the marketplace which eventually ends up being enough to buy some DLCs.
- Way better refund policy/customer support. Responses from Steam even in a pandemic is lightyears faster than GOG. While that 30 day window might look appealing on GOG, that's all it is honestly in comparison to refund policies on other storefronts. 2 hrs/2weeks is more than enough to get a decent feel of whether you're enjoying something or not, having errors etc., unless you like to let your game idle/have other things going on.
- The foreign transaction fees are thing for many user
I can go on and on. Despite all of that, I've still used GOG for games every now and then to support DRM free gaming, but their actions lately have pissed me off so I'm ranting. GOG is the largest DRM free store front out there and you know this when you see Horizon Zero Dawn (and many other big games) here and not on itchio lol.
Being completely DRM free means you keep everything you've downloaded if you get banned, it means you can play your game with your save and everything on another PC at cafes, a friend's place, etc., (obviously not distributing the game to not breach any agreements). It also means you can avoid Denuvo performance hits without waiting for official or unofficial means to remove it (though Denuvo has never hit hard enough for me to ever notice in any game, tests are out there to show the differences).
*Sigh* I need some space GOG/rant over.
