I love GWENT — especially when I am winning. At times, I hate it — it’s when I get my ass kicked. GWENT is one of the very few games I play almost every day (I clocked close to 350 hours). Why am I telling you this? It’s because I want you to know that I’m invested and treat GWENT very personally.

I still remember the excitement of E3 2016 when we announced GWENT on PC and consoles. It was a blast! Well received by both you — gamers — and the media, I think we couldn't have had a better opening. And boy..., were we naive. Compared to the single player RPGs we had been creating so far, we didn’t realize how different it was to operate and develop a live game at the same time.

A year later, we took GWENT to Public Beta and — again — tons of gamers jumped in and checked it out. We still had a lot to learn. But, as always, we adapted. What we didn’t realize back then was that we also started slowly drifting away from our original vision for standalone GWENT. While fighting with the everyday reality of regular updates and content drops, we lost sight of what was unique and fun about the game. And you played a big role in making us realize that. Thank you for your sincere feedback!

We have never accepted ‘good enough’ at our company. We have always taken risks and made bold decisions if we believed they would result in a better game. And, you’ve guessed it, we’ve just made one now.

We call this project GWENT Homecoming

We want GWENT to kick some serious ass and reignite your passion for our beloved CCG. We would like to ask you for your trust and patience. We need 6 months of fully-focused development to deliver what we’ve planned. Aside from standard season transitions and events like Faction Challenges or Warped Arena rulesets, we will release only two updates during this time. One in April — it will introduce the missing Premium Cards as well as faction specific board skins — and one in May, which will balance out the game (Wardancer included) with a new approach to “Create”. Six months is a long time, however, on the flip side, after Homecoming concludes, we will go out of beta and release Thronebreaker at the same time. Don’t worry about your progress, once Homecoming is complete, for a limited time, you will have the ability to mill all of your cards for their full value. Regarding our esports activities, for now, our calendar is not changing.

As for details on Homecoming, Kasia and Rafał, GWENT’s leads, have broken down the project into the following key pillars:

• Turning GWENT into a battlefield
When you play GWENT, you are a leader of an army from the world of The Witcher. We want to put more effort into reflecting that in in-game mechanics and visuals. As an example, we would like to introduce a preferred row for some cards that would grant them additional benefits when put on that row. Also, rows in the front and back would always grant a different buff when a unit is placed there.

• Upgrading the board
Currently, rows don’t have direct impact on gameplay. If we count the hands of both players, we are looking at 8 rows in total. Our greatest visual assets — card art and premium versions of cards — are too small to shine in the current view. What we’re aiming for is a complete overhaul of the visual experience. The redesign will leave no stone unturned. We are even considering cutting one of the rows and leaving only melee and range. It’s still something that requires extensive testing, but we’re that serious about making things work.

• Fixing the coin mechanic
Currently, going second can give players a significant advantage. We heard you — we will ‘fix the coin flip’ and are already testing possible solutions.

• Revamping player progression
We have a lot of things planned for new and returning players. We will be offering a proper tutorial to ease first time players into playing GWENT. There will also be a new leveling system, achievements and a revised ranked mode — all with suitable rewards.

• Focusing on skill and player agency
We heard you discussing the “Create” mechanic. At first, we thought it would be an interesting addition to the game, but — as time passed — we realized that this form of wide RNG is not something that fits our focus on player skill. We will be extra careful with these types of mechanics in the redesign process. That said, if we manage to find some cards interesting enough to include, but ‘too crazy for Ranked’, they will still have their place in Arena and Casual Mode.

• Re-focusing on core gamers
We want GWENT to remain a deep game, where each faction has its identity and offers distinctive gameplay archetypes. We want rows to really matter in terms of gameplay, and gameplay itself needs to be engaging and rewarding.

• Bringing back The Witcher
Homecoming will bring back a darker aesthetic and mood, more in sync with the original Witcher lore. We’ll change the main menus and in-game shop, as well as work on a consistent UI and UX throughout the entire game.

• Thronebreaker
We saved the best for last. After Homecoming concludes, we will launch GWENT along with Thronebreaker — our single player campaign. A dedicated team has been hard at work to deliver you a great new story from the Witcher universe. Expect goodness!

Breja: +1 I just want to congratulate you on you remarkably sane approach to competative game, while also spotlighting one of the reasons why one of the most important aspects of a CCG, you know the whole "collecting" thing, is close to worthless in an online game.

Sadly it's not what I'm asking for, people who use Casual mode use the same metadecks as on ladder, because they either farm an event or a quest or they just afraid of losing rank on ladder and play casual instead. It's fine to have this no pressure mode for ranked people, but I'm asking for a mode where there's no incentive to "tryhard" (a real casual mode).
Kudos to the devs for facing and admitting the sorry state of their game (as much as they can publicly) and committing to a much needed complete overhaul. I've been playing card games for 10+ years and the way this usually goes is the company leans on the inevitable minority of agressively cheerleading players (players that no matter what will actively post to insist the game is doing great and will scorn and police legitimate complaints without any need for input from the company) to pretend everything is fine until the entirely predictable silent bleeding out of players leads to a pathetic shutdown, if they even bother to officially shut it down at all.

So again kudos, on the whole this is actually a good sign.

What is not so good is this 6 month without updates period. I wonder if it just wouldn't be better to just shut it down till relaunch, there really seems to be no advantage to letting an actually dead game linger, it will just deteriorate the public perception till relaunch date.
Please leave the creating rng! I have my favourite deck which is "I dont own any of this" which is a nilfgaard deck with the most rng possible with my favourite card the slave driver. You always end up with almost 4 factions on your side of the board and the random synergies are amazing, i might do a video to show you how much fun it is.

Seriously? Of all the balancing needs, you chose to tell about "Wardancer"? Wardancer at least has a very big risk. I have lost a few games because I drew Wardancer as the last swap (and from First Light) and it killed my chances to win. It is a high risk and high reward card. Lets talk about the freaking Viper Witcher.

Players comes with 3 Viper Witchers, 3 Ointment, 3 Mahakam Ale, Slave Driver, Vicavaro Novice, Vesemir Mentor, and other alchemy cards (making the Viper Witchers to deal 10 damage).

Effectively, they have six 15 power Bronze cards (3 VW, and 3 Ointment), right at the beginning of the game. Without any need to setup or get a momentum, right from the beginning, they have 6 bronze cards which are worth 15 power, which can stop 6 engine cards or any good cards). I had read discussions about it and 'experts' saying going high on alchemy wont work. But this is how the game goes (every single freaking game.)

They use Slave Driver and get two units in two rows (SD, and Opponent's unit). If I play a good card (any engine card), they are immediately killed by VW. If I stall with a normal card, they ues VN on the third row and use Mahakam Ale and get +12. Any good card played is immediately killed with VW. They have enough option to keep stalling until I give up round 1 or play my strategy which would then be immediately shut down by VW. And they can use this bloody card for 6 times. I don't mind losing. If I am allowed to play and then I lose, I will be fine. With VW, I am not even allowed to play.

If there is any balancing need, it should be this VW. Make his base power 6 so that Ointment can't be used on him. I am around 2800 points and every time I go near ranking up (3k points), I get these stupid build. It is just frustrating.

Please don't think I hate to lose at all. I get beaten at least 50% of the games. There are some insane builds with Reveal, Spy, NR armor build, etc. It is ok to lose if your cards are on the board. I don't know how the masters/experts play. May be there are builds which also need balancing. But I think this should be the most frustrating way to lose a game.

I used to play Monster deck. After around 2500+ it is just impossible to play with monster and switched to SC. At least I have a chance to win if I get a good card now. But with VW, even if get the best cards, I couldn't win. I have never won against this build.

[If someone can tell how to counter it with a SC build, I will be happy to try. Please remember, I am a F2P player.]

I spent 2 weeks to get the card I wanted and put up with the game rules changing but then the art on my card changed, not added a new card but removed the art I worked hard to get so I stopped playing.

I wish them luck with it... never going going back!
You do realize you are playing a beta right and playing a game under active devleoipment? I mean of all the things... really? Your probably should have waited until the game actually released so you would not have be disapointed. Just being honest.

They already stated Cyberpunk will be mostly a single player experience just like the witcher 3 with some online aspects. I would love to take a wager on this?

I mean they release one online game that is deisgned like most other popular CCG games on the market ( and in some ways not even like other CCG because it will have a full single player experience) and suddenly a few people act like all of their games will be like this now. Please tell me when EA or Ubisoft became CDPR.

In casual there's no incentive to tryhard but you can't force people to play only non meta deck.
The only interesting part for me is Thronebreaker. I don't care a bit about that multiplayer, Galaxy-based micro-transactions BS that you turned Gwent into. But I would love to buy Gwent as a single-player game. Of course only completely DRM free and without Galaxy compulsion.

Well there is a problem with that anyway, CDPR doesn't own GOG so they litterally can't become Valve unless you are referring to something other than the storefront? CDPR's paraent company does. Quite frankly there is nothing wrong with serving two different markets, it's not GOG problem if certain people have built up an image in their head about what GOG should be. In most aspects, GOG is still the same company is has always been still offering the same goals like DRM free games, etc. but with an expanded focus.
And the "expanded focus" being: let's drop everything we stood for and said we would fight for.
