drealmer7: might want to spoiler your stuff since this is a thread for someone having not played
avatar
ariaspi: It's a very minor spoiler and if people are so worried about the time limit imposed by this quest, that some are not even willing to play it anymore, I guess my disclosure will only ease some of those worries.
it's not the time limit it's the thing about the other part about the time limit, the time limit is a known thing at the start of the game

TheSlipGateUser: Hello, I am going to play Fallout 1 during Christmas as part of a challange for myself as I want to delve into unknown territories (since I'm more of an FPS person), and I need some tips and tricks to have a good start on this game.
Good. :)
There is big difference between NOT taking Fast Shot, and TAKING Fast Shot with reasonable Perception. If you like automatic stuff, do TAKE Fast Shot and good PE.

First and most important thing, is to keep in mind that if it is anything like 2 (censored), you might first seek some mod.

Don't know, never tried it, but is it really worth it? You can't make aimed shots with that anymore...seems like quite the disadvantage, if you have built up decent arms skills and hit someone in the eyes or head, you can often kill enemies with one hit. And shooting people in the head is just fun...wouldn't recommend fast shot, at least for a 1st playthrough.
def bleh to fast shot

bloody mess + increased XP

Yeah I was thinking about the same, but maybe this depends on one's playing style, and there is no one right answer... I was also thinking that being able to accurately shoot criticals to eyes with Alien Blaster... pretty much one-shot kills.

i recall a similar discussion for Fallout Tactics, where some pointed out that especially because the aimed critical hits are seriously nerfed in Tactics (they do much less damage overall than in Fallout 1-2; I guess this is because the game is supposed to be more tactical, maybe even multiplayer), so one could just as well have Fast Shot without aimed criticals.

However, I think without aimed shots to eyes or head, some enemies in Fallout Tactics become impossible to destroy in higher difficulty levels. Since they can kill your whole party in one round when they get into range, pretty much the only way to destroy them is to sneak near them, and then get a critical hit with a powerful energy weapon to their head or eyes, which knocks them down. That way they can't fight back, as long as they are unconscious.

It can be absolutely deadly with the sniper perk and high luck: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sniper
With 8 luck and 12 action points you can fire, for example, the .223 pistol (Blade Runner gun) 3 times in one turn or the turbo plasma rifle 4 times in one turn, with 80% crit chance on a hit!

TheSlipGateUser: Hello
If you want a full list of tips, there are always of course, FAQs. If you just want a few things to nudge you in the right direction without any spoilers:

1) As has been said many times, the time limit is NOT a concern. I've heard of many players being overly stressed by it. If you're one of those, don't worry. You'd have to really mess up and intentionally waste time to not finish before the limit. DON'T let the timer ruin your fun.

2) Your starting stats are pretty much set in stone. Choose stats you'll want to have at the end of the game. Strength is needed to wear heavier armors (if you want to) so don't go low. Action points are king.... you'll want as many as possible. Later on you're offered perks... some of them only appear if the right stat is high enough. So have high two or three stats relevant fo your character.

3) For skills, tag at least one ranged weapon, maybe even two. Melee somewhat, but especially Unarmed, suck. You might want to tag Trade for better prices. Don't take stealth or pickpocket.

4) You can find a few companions, but be careful when fighting with them. The game has poor AI, and they can easily hit you when shooting at enemies. Stay out of their line of fire, and control what weapons they use so they don't kill you.

5) There are a few good mods out there that can improve numerous features, including the companions. I recommend them.

deja65: Nice choice.Hope you enjoy it ;).Cheers
I would recommend that only for a second playthrough. Otherwise the player understands about as much of the game as the character does ... not much.

darthspudius: But you don't have to rush it. There are hundreds of posts stating that.

Hirkis: I know the allocated time is more than enough to explore and finish the game, I can't explain it, it's just a psychological thing I guess. In a setting like Fallout, survival alone should provide enough incentive, without there being a time limit.
Hm, sounds like the kind of tension that is good. ;)

Spoiler!

High PE+Fast shot + Sniper + high LK = every shot critical.

High PE+Fast shot + Sniper + high LK + Better Criticals = 20% chance for insta kill with any shot in volley.

Hmm, interesting, thanks. Seems to be a more advanced character build than I did...have to try that someday :-)
For a first time play through I would do a high strength character, worry about finding all the different dialogue options the second time around. Also whatever you do, don't stand in front of Ian.
