SumoX: Now that I've used Galaxy for a bit, I think I prefer just using the downloader.

It's super convenient and much faster than Galaxy is. Plus it actually lets me back up my games- my biggest fear of Galaxy now is that I won't be able to just get the Exe's anymore.
Bear in mind that you've not tried Galaxy but a product in an early development stage.

Galaxy was planned for release on August 31, 2014 (with big announcements and the partial delaying of D:OS to meet that date). Can someone explain to me how it can still be in early development stage?

It wasn't. What was planned for release was Galaxy multiplayer, like the one that is in Rise of the Triad (2013).

The only thing I recall hearing was TBA 2014. Obviously, that (star)ship has sailed in a galaxy far away.

Perhaps they meant TBA as in To Be Announced (in 2014), which they did.

I'm also a frequent user of the downloader and one annoying feature is that it cannot delete older versions, not even if upon request. So very often I have several installers in some quite badly named folders over the years and have to guess manually what are the right files.

Maighstir: GOG has said that getting the installers will be possible as they have always been, but who knows, ... maybe they'll give that up too.
And this will be the time for the middle-finger.

This would be good programmer time and an improvement.
