Well, that fits.
It's John Oliver about the anniversary of the events on Tiananmen Square.

Fixed so he would be able to read your post.
No wonder none of my Chinese friends will join me for an MP session of "Duke It Out in Tiananmen Square".

fronzelneekburm: Welp, gog found a new way to troll Chinese customers: When you try to redeem a game, you need to enter a captcha. Thing is, reCaptcha doesn't work in China.

Anyone got any ideas for a workaround (y'know, preferably one that doesn't involve a VPN that gets blocked as well)?
A lot of the free VPNs are blocked but some of the paid ones still have workarounds. It's what I'm using right now and it's not just edgecast being blocked that causes me problems.

Streaming video is impossible on some sites, videos crash more often than not
Speed throttling for non-Chinese websites until after midnight
The horror of not being able to open half of your search results for no fucking reason
Images load very slowly and when they do.....
......they will stop loading at all until you restart your web browser
.....or wait 10 minutes or something stupid like that

Using the internet without a VPN is a nightmare here. I'm using a paid VPN at the moment and am quite happy with it. Seriously, just fork over the cash for a VPN subscription. It will save you a lot of headaches

The way the great firewall works sure is some grade-A trolling. During the day, I usually get an average download speed of 0,1 MB/s, sometimes 0,2 MB/s if I'm really lucky. But after midnight something changes... I guess all the party officials want to surf for porn without their video stream spazzing out every few seconds. Whatever the reason, some time late at night, the firewall opens its gates. Blocked sites still remain blocked, but your connection isn't artificially slowed down any more. Now suddenly I get different download speeds: it NEVER drops below 1 MB/s, the average speed is about 4 MB/s, sometimes it goes up to 6 MB/s.

At least I can finally download my EA games now. :P
Where is Mr. Gorbachev when we need him the most?

Tear down this wall!
I'm already shocked that some chinese dare (& manage) to escape the controls of their dictatorship, but doing it just for games surprises me even more O_o

The trick in China is called 科学上网(scientific go online).
All advanced users there have to work around the Great Firewall.
Basic-level and normal users only have the big big big intranet in China. No internet at all.
