PetrusOctavianus: Why should they (and Steam) sell a free game?
avatar
Swedrami: Because there are idiots with too much disposable income like me, I guess.

Plus, they are already being sold on the other platform.
So why not here on GoG as well? Plenty of old farts around here too who wouldn't mind spending money on these classics, as unimaginable as this may sound.
Well, it's not like I can't afford it. But it's the principle.
But then Jeff Bezos got filthy rich partly by selling short stories already in the public domain to idiots that don't care about the sloppy OCR errors as long as they can feel good knowing they have paid.

For people who need Galaxy or Steam as some kind of umbilical cord?
Some people just like having it in their steam or GoG library. $2.99 is a small price to pay for some folks just for that fact alone.
Is anyone here keeping a list of games that GOG has rejected?

I hear about these rejections quite often, so I assume they reject a lot. But it's hard to keep track of it.

I just now learned that GOG has rejected GemCraft 2: Chasing Shadows :( https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/gemcraft_2_chasing_shadows

There is a topic with the list of games that were rejected by GOG:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_gogcom_has_turned_down/post201
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_gogcom_has_turned_down/post202

This list was last updated a year ago, so there is a chance that some of the games from this list are already on GOG.

samuraigaiden: where is the first Project IGI?
avatar
clarry: Oh I'd love to try that one.

Where is Delta Force Xtreme 2?
avatar
clarry: Is that one actually good? I recently played all the Delta Force on GOG. Well, all except Delta Force 2 because it kept crashing, and Delta Force Xtreme because it just wasn't good at all IMO.
AFAIK Xtreme 2 is terrible, but still if you have the entire series here it should be here too. They probably should've bundled it with Xtreme 1.

Soldier of Fortune 3 is here, Ultima 9 is here, King's Quest 8 is here. GOG is no stranger to having lesser games in the store for the sake of being able to own a complete series.
Wasn't the DOS version of Temple of Apshai Trilogy buggy in some way? I remember reading about no getting experience after returning to the inn or something like that.

timppu: (I wonder if there were any multiplatforms game which were better on Spectrum than e.g. Commodore 64? Maybe there are...)
I think people tend to conclude that the first 3 Dizzy games were tailor made for the ZX spectrum; they do look a bit...butt on the C64.
At least in regards to Dunjonquest: ToA it looks like it's actually not that bad that it's not on GoG yet:

https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=77242
"After playing it for a bit, I noticed it plays very oddly for Apshai. For one, the monsters do almost no damage, to even lightly armored characters. I've never gotten any experience, even from completely clearing a level. And the amount of silver it gives out is crazy. A couple trips in to the room with a copper ingot will easily net thousands of silvers. There's no challenge at all - and that's bizarre for Apshai. It's usually quite difficult starting out.

It's been a while since I played so I tried the versions of Trilogy for C64 and Atari, as well as the original Temple of Apshai for C64 just to make sure it's not bad memory. Even with the same character stats, those versions are as difficult as I expect.

The monsters do very little damage
The game never gives any experience (always 0)
The game gives way more silver than items are valued at
Monsters don't move when resting (taking 0 steps)"

Although GoG maybe could have worked their magic and fixed (some of) those issues(?).
They do have expertise in this regard as well, iirc.

That's too bad. It seems like this version of the game is completely broken. I don't mind CGA graphics but not when game mechanics is not implemented correctly.
Was thinking about Rogue and looking at the Roguelike vs Roguelite comparisons (very little it seems).

Wiki says original source code for Rogue was never released. But the original game was free right? (Internet archive link is dead when trying to get a copy of the original game). Remember playing the old unix version of rogue... and Nethack...

Temple of Apshai - played it on old C64.. remember the problems with getting it to run properly. Was good back then (that and Wizards crown?.. any games these days with similar mechanics etc?)

What sort of mechanics do those games use? I'm interested in less conventional RPG mechanics, and would be interested in having an idea of how those games handled things.

(I know that, for example, in Ultima 1 you don't have max HP and healing; instead, HP is more like gold in that it's something that you accumulate, lose when you take damage, and just get more rather than conventional healing.)

Reminds me of Wizardry Summoner for the Game Boy Advance.
* Enemies give very little experience, meaning that it would take way too long to reach the levels the game expects you to be at. (Not 0, however.)
* The game gives you way too much momey. So much, in fact, that you run into the problem of having nothing to do with it far too early, and it means that things like curing minor statuses at the temple are quite practical in this game.
* Because of these two things, the game is rather frustrating, and a way to convert gold to XP would have made the game much more manageable.

Kelefane: Steam has been adding a lot of old games lately. At this point, I wont be shocked if Steam gets Dungeon Master 1+2 before GoG does, among other older classics that GoG lacks.
Do not give me hope like that. :(
