No, I think it is needed to get access to certain things in the Paradox forum.

"Please register your HoI3 CD key

This will grant you access to the user mods , technical support, bug reports and multiplayer forums!"

Testing that. But it's definitely necessary to get full access to the HoI III subforum at Paradox.

Edit: Doesn't look like the Multiplayer needs a key. So it's only a forum key.

I didn't need it to start the game. When I closed it the following website was opened automatically: http://www.introversion.co.uk/prisonarchitect/register/

Maybe you are able to register it over there.

Hmmm, have you bought only the base game or the two pieces of DLC as well? I'm asking because the Name in Game DLC offers a serial key which is necessary for an account registration in Introversion's site.

I grabbed the artbook + soundtrack DLC but not the "name" DLC.

I'm not positive about the GOG key, but the Humble one allowed you to register on Introversion's website, and download a DRM free version from there. That way you didn't have to wait for Humbles version to get updated.
