Hi, (please endure my bad english, i'm french, so excuse my french)

So i just discovered that gog client ain' doing the trick anymore to download our games.

Instead, it seems that i have two choices:

1- use gog galaxy, which won't allow me to download my games and install them without being "online", so i say "fuck that".

2- use my internet browser to download the "setup file". But now, the setup fileS are divided into, like, 4 or 5 files, wich is a pain in the ass to download, (compared to the former "setup.exe" (one file) download option, on the browser or with gog downloader.)

Now, i have two questions, one for Gog team, and one for us gog users:

- Gog team, owner, and so on: are you trying to put on some kind of actual DRM system, steam-like buying, installing, playing, monitoring what you're playin' system or what? What's up with the several part setup.exe download via browser?

- Gog user? Are you o.k with this? (it's not ironic, i really want to know if i'm just freaking out about nothing at all, or if the DRM-free deal is really going down)

Thanks for sharing,

AMG

You still can use the old GOG downloader. The links are just a little bit hidden now. Use the "more" menu on the gamecard in your account and choose "Gog Downloader Links".

Galaxy is optional and it will be, you can still download everything from the website and through the GOG Downloader.
I OK with it as long as when looking at the details you still can download your standalone installers fully patched and without DRM.

And you can. With the Galaxy client (which is partly just a downloader you can) and with the GOG downloader you can (Game/More/Downloader links) and with diverse scripts and fan made downloaders you can and even with the browser you can (although this is some pain in the ass).

So nothing really to complain about??

It does, they just hid that option pretty well. You can still use the client as downloader for your DRM-free installers, and they've always be split up like that, btw, if they're of a certain size.

In Galaxy, click on the game in question, then instead of clicking "Install", click on the "More" button right next to it, and choose "Get Backup & Extras". Galaxy will list the files just like on the website, and you can download them from there, archive them on your harddisk or whereever you want to, then install and play them without any need for Galaxy or an online connection.

So yeah, I'm okay with it, because it's an optional client that doesn't interfere with GOG's DRM-free policy because you can still backup your installers just like before. And I guess you are overreacting to the change a bit, but it's understandable as the option to download DRM-free backups via the client isn't as obvious at first glance as it could (should?) be.

GOG Galaxy doesn't have to be online to download. You can download from the primordial ether that permeates and subjugates humanity.

I joke, of course. But GOG Galaxy has to be on-line to download b/c the files are on-line. So you can turn off all of the Galaxy features and select "download digital backup" to download just like the GOG Downloader does.

Also, the files have always been like they are. Some have many files (big games) and some have small files (usually less than 600ishMB -- the size of a CD).
1. offline installer, Galaxy
2. offline installer, GOG downloader

Huh, that's weird. How are you supposed to burn an 8GB file to disc?

Ok, my bad guys and my bad Cd Projekt, i didn't found that you could still use the old gog downloader to get your game, I'm totally to blame then.

It's just that i didn't found it, even if i looked for that option.

I'm seriously not against change, but i'm, like, so afraid that one day, GOG will turn to the dark side of the digital retailing...

I bought so much games here, and i'm so in love with Gog from the beginning, that i don' want it to turn bad.

But i'm an idiot right now and i got a little bit upset about what gog galaxy could lead to.

Cheers!

It's is very simple. GOG Galaxy = Steam without the DRM. Well that is what they are trying to do...

PS
There is a French GOG forum.

Galaxy includes the functionality of the downloader.

The downloader still works, downloads directly via the browser still work, and apparently even Galaxy can download ( and back-up ) installer files, instead of directly installing them. Plus, the installers being split into separate files is very important for people with slow or "average" connection speeds and unreliable internet.

So, in conclusion, all is well. Galaxy just provides a more convenient way of installing and managing your games ( among other features ) for people who are into that sort of thing.

A dual layer DVD? They hold 8.x GB IIRC.

Please don't feel bad about it. The GOG downloader links are really well hidden. Didn't find them at first as well.
