Greybriar: If there were an option to filter out the games I already own (592) from the search, I believe it would help a lot.
It would, but there isn't.

A userscript by Barefoot_Monkey used to offer this option, but the anniversary revamp broke it, and he hasn't updated it (yet).
I have no problem finding games on GOG because I constantly browse sale and sometimes look at the GOGMixes people put together, then go look up reviews of highly rated games in a genre I feel like playing, at outside review sites. It is very fast to look up some high rated games in any genre, then come to GOG to see if they have it. Metal Jesus Rocks has wonderful reviews of rpgs and other types on any platform, both new and old, & you can search by type or platform; he is an avid collector and has a great discord server community as well. The major review sites are also good, like IGN and I forget who else.

I can find a new or old highly rated cool game to buy in about 5-10 minutes by scanning gog game reviews and cross referencing external reviews that cover pc gaming. And GOG store page has a filter for searching, also. The GOGmix lists by users are useful too.

You can google something like "best rpg's pc", for example... look at a couple of search hits, then come to GOG and look at a game's reviews. You are pretty safe picking a game that is top rated in other places plus GOG, and where the user reviews describe why the gameplay is satisfying and fun, to see if it is the type of thing you would like.

PS:
On android, I use Naked Browser for using the GOG website. Also, Puffin is good.

I don't find review sites to be very helpful. When I look at reviews for a game that I have played through, more often than not I either see a major discrepancy between what I think about the game and what review sites had to say, or the review is so vague or back and forth so as to not really say anything useful. Also, I much prefer player reviews, because players don't have the sort of conflict of interest that big sites do who are trying to attract visitors, advertisers, and partners to make money by writing about the game industry.

Also, I have found that searching for 'best' anything tends to not bring up good search results, likely because so many sites are trying to get to the top of search engines by including those sorts of terms (best, this vs. that, top 10 of 2019). I'm looking to get away from that sort of phoniness, not dive into it.

I can say that I don't ever remember finding a good game by searching for games in those ways. I have much better luck by talking to other gamers and searching within forums. But doing that can become very time consuming.

I'm not sure what to think about algorithms trying to determine and filter what your personal preferences are supposed to be. I think a flexible tag-based system possibly with (controlled) user involvement like on Steam would be the most useful solution.

But I can't see any of this happening here on GOG, especially not now with the rumours of GOG struggling. People have been complaining about the search engines and lots of other things that need improvement on the website and the forums - and made good suggestions on how to fix them - for years, without success. You still can't even do something as seemingly simple as sorting by price on this shop, how can you expect them to integrate more complicated things like new search engines? And if something changes at all, GOG usually takes one step forward, two steps back.

seppelfred: Take your time, browse through the WHOLE catalog once, and put every game you like on your wishlist.
That doesn't sound practical, that sounds obsessive.

It's more practical and much faster than discussing this topic for weeks on the forum. Brew a can of Earl Grey, sit down and just do it in one session.
