Hi all, I had a question about how GOG handles updates for software still receiving official support. I've never purchased any recent software here, so I was hoping someone might be able to chime in.

When GOG first launched, they only sold classic titles that were no longer being officially updated, so the question of access to regular updates after purchase was mostly moot. GOG now sells recent titles as well as classics though, so it's an issue of concern. For example, GOG sells the indie strategy game Xenonauts, which is still receiving regular updates (v1.59 was released just a few months ago). If I were to purchase it, would I have access to the updates the same as if I were to purchase it on Steam? I notice in my game library that occasionally various titles will get marked as "updated." But there's no log as to what exactly's been updated--whether there's been bug fixes or just wallpaper or soundtracks made available for download are left a mystery (at least from what I can tell, I haven't been able to find any logs). It seems the only way to tell is to continuously monitor your library, manually keeping track of everything that's available for download for each game in your library. And even if you did that, you'd still never know if the game itself had received updates.

Can anyone answer this question?

I can try! You will get updates. As a point of fair disclosure, in the past they have occasionally been a bit slower than Steam. But on the bright side more often than not it's because GoG "vets" new patches / updates so you can rest assured they won't break your game more than they fix it.

It's pretty much an unconfirmed but general consensus that Galaxy support (if you're so inclined to partake) will probably help the speed with which GoG updates games, particularly the new release indies. Again, Galaxy is still in Beta and this is still unconfirmed, but if I were a betting man I know where my money would be.

Hope that helps! And I know I for one wouldn't worry about support for titles when making a purchase here - but I'm a bit of a fan and haven't been let down before!
