Ok...new user here......paid for program, and it says I got it. Now I want to download it. Get a screen that says I have to download an app. This is for my desktop PC, not a smartphone. Am an OF (old fart) with very limited understanding of how this stuff works (I just LOVE plug & play). Getting very frustrated !

Go to your library ("games" in the drop-down menu under your account name at the top of the page) and you should see all your games there. Click on the game you want to download, and click on the files you'll see there. Download them through your browser like any other files, use the exe file to install the game and you should be good to go.

The "app" (Galaxy I presume) is not required. Some games come with two sets of installers, one that includes Galaxy and the other "classic installer" entirely standalone. In those cases the classic installer files can be found in the drop-down "more" menu of your chosen game.

One more thing Crustybucket, letting you know just in case, the Galaxy installer will have a (g) in the file name, you want the file without the (g)

First of all: Welcome!

Considering yourself OF you'll feel right at home here... Many of us around.

As Breja wrote, you can download the installer (just like in the old times) from your library. Just make sure to download all files (usually there are more than one) into the same directory.

Or you can download the Galaxy "app". Which is simply a game-manager/launcher which helps with installing games from this site and keeps them up to date. I personally find it very convenient, but people here have rather mixed feelings about it, because it resembles the Steam (you might have heard of that one?) client. That's for Windows only though, at least ATM.

Maybe some other user can post some screenshots - mine wouldn't be helpful, because I have heavily modded the site and it would look quite different on your machine.

PS: I you have trouble, you can also ask people like me in chat (hover the mouse over the username and see if "Start Conversation" is available - some users only accept chat requests from friends).

The default setting is to not allow chat, so you (Crustybucket) will need to change your settings first before you send anyone a message.

One other thing that's worth noting: On Linux, after downloading the file, you will need to make it executable (this step is necessary because of Linux's file permissions model which, in this case, is there to keep you from executing a virus by accident). Also, on any OS (though Windows is the one most commonly to encounter this issue), if your antivirus software is misbehaving (or something went really wrong and there's a virus on GOG's server, in which case chances are someone on the forum will post something about it), it might prevent you from downloading or running the installer, or might interfere with being able to play the game afterwords.

Oh yeah, forgot, the program is Sid Meyers "Pirates.....". I have an old bootleg copy of the program on CD, but it's not the latest update, I think, but a newer one, since it doesn't have the "F1, CTRL" type play, but rather mouse control with a small dialog box in the right lower corner. I'm afraid to do anything with my copy, since it can't be copied again to a new CD, so if it's damaged, well, there goes the program. ....... And thank you all for the replies....however....it's just "greek" to me....My OS is Win 10.

Not to be rude, but I just don't know how to explain it any simpler... so I'll just resort to pictures. Hope that clears things up.

If you follow Breja's instruction, this will DL the file to your Downloads folder. You can then copy/move it anywhere you like or you can just run it from there to install the game. To install, just double click on the file (it's an .exe file, so it will run as soon as you do so) and the installer will start. Just follow the prompts. Once that's done, you'll have the game installed and ready to play. There will either be a desktop icon to start the game or a start menu entry, or both.
